A Decent Place To Stay

The Lakeview Lodge is the first Lodge you see coming into Lee Vining as you come from Yosemite. It is on the left hand side of the road, despite the fact that there is a huge sign on the right which gives you the impression that the 4 little rooms under the sign comprise the lodge. I found myself pulling up to the little rooms and saying to myself, "this is it???"
Check in was painless. As I got to my room I noticed the refrigerator kept making a loud noise every 30 mins or so. I wound up turning the power down to keep it from turning on again.
I hurt my pinky finger and nearly fell over when I placed my hand on the counter in the bathroom. Part of the counter is not attached to the wall which is unforgiveable. The counter is sitting on two "L" brackets being held only by gravity. It should be attached to the brackets (or wall) with screws.
The amenities were surprising. I didnt expect a microwave or a fridge but there they were, and there were plenty of movie channels on the cable TV although probably not more than the usual 20 or so stations.
The rooms are a little dark. The a/c does need to be upgraded. It is old, and you turn it on by pressing a button. Theres no automatic settings like most hotels where you set it at a certain cooling level, and then when the room reaches a certain temperature it turns off. This one just keeps going and going. It was difficult to figure out how to use it because the letters under the buttons had faded off completely.
I didnt have any problem with internet. I did see an internet port downstairs, however, there were at least 2 (maybe more) unsecured wireless networks available from my room. Lee Vining seems to have a nice array of unsecured connections for techies like me.
The city of Lee Vining has a population of 398. There are no stoplights in this city, and you can walk from one end to the other in less than 20 minutes.
The most popular place to eat is Tioga Toomey's or Woah Nellie Deli. This restaurant is situated inside a Mobile gas station at the intersection of 120 and 395. If you are coming from Yosemite there are no signs of a restaurant visible from 120. Be on the lookout for it.
They serve gourmet food here which is expensive. The portions are large and the food is unique. They serve up all kinds of different dishes from fish tacos - one with Mango salsa, one with Ginger Coleslaw served w Brazilian Black Beans ($10.95). I had the St Louis Style Baby Back BBQ Ribs w/Huckleberry BBQ Sauce, Garlic Mash Potatoes, and Veggies ($17.95). I wasn't too impressed with the "Veggies" as it comprised of simply 3 stalks of broccoli but the ribs were very succulent, tender, and filling...excellent! For drink they offered a locally brewed beer called "Lobotomy" brewed by a local Indian tribe, as well as Mango Margaritas. Many of these items are unique and cannot be found elsewhere so it's really worth a look.
