Old and in need of remodeling
By ,
The staff are very friendly . Cigarette smell is terrible throughout the lobby and even outside property. Dirty and poorly maintained . This place will soon be gone if it isn't upgraded . Elevator is very small and slow . The luggage carts are falling apart and barely roll over the rough sidewalks. Its obvious the owners are milking the last drop of value out of the Makai . I presict it will be torn down in the near future. I hate to see it go . My wife and son spent many happy vacations there in the late 70's - early 80's . Do not shop the Oceans Club souvenier store across the street . Very unfriendly clerk. Our grandson needed to use ther restroom . I had just used it myself with permission of an employee / manager. As we approached the door a sales person jumped in front of us and held the door stating that it was not working. I replied that I has just used it and it was working fine. She insisted and continued to hold the door . I explained that this 5 year old need to go . She insisted that it was out of order . I told her that the man in the office let me use it just now and it was not out of order . She held the door like a bouncer and insisted that no one let me use the restroom. I knocked on the office door and the man opened it . He told her to let us in. She mumbled something and walked away. As we were leaving a customer pulled in the parking lot and started to go in. I stopped her and told her what had just happened . She said , " I'm certainly not going in there ". We left without making a purchase and that lady left . Wonder if it was worth $100-$200 to them for the womans stupidity.

Dirtiest hotel ever with hidden charges
By ,
This was the dirtiest, most rundown hotel I have ever stayed at. I was afraid to get under the covers or put my head on the pillow. But, knowing that the comforters dont get washed with each visit, what do you do? It was 2 in the morning and we were tired. In the morning, we found hair in the tub, the toilet was dirty and the white towels were gray. We found this hotel in a special online and it was suppose to be $43 a night. They did comp us for 1/2 the cost and I should have looked at my bill before I left. We were there about 5 hours, all we could sleep because the room next door had a barking dog at 8am. They billed us $48.50 for the room then added an undisclosed $1.50 plus tax for a safe that we didn't use, and undisclosed $3.00 parking fee plus tax. The internet even states free parking. In addition, there is a county and state sales tax. Buyer beware! The staff was very nice.

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME
By ,
The room we had was filthy. It had dirty shower, trash and dust bunnies behind furniture and a dead roach in the track to the sliding glass door. When we asked for another room, they offered another that was just as bad with peeling paint on the walls and ceiling. We finally just went to the Best Western down the street which was much nicer!

Concerned that $3.00 parking fee has been added!
By ,
We have stayed for over 20 years for summer vacation and Turkey Rod Run; however, there continues to be a mildew smell. The staff is friendly, but we did like it better when it was family owned. We arrived this week to find that there is an added $3.00 charge for parking that you are not told about when making reservations, and also a $1.50 charge to use the safe. The safe charge is added regardless, and you have to let them know that you did not use it. We are looking to move to a new motel for our next visit.

good and bad
By ,
We have stayed here several times. The building is very old, but we've always found it clean. The A/C is nice and cold - the view is fantastic! The pool/deck area is large and clean. They have a nice jacuzzi where you can sit and look out on the ocean - this is the only feature we have come back here for. Problems: they charge for parking, and one time we came back from a meal and there were NO spaces. There WERE many vehicles parked there with no Makai stickers. The desk guy pointed across the street near a dirt area and said we could park over there. They did at least refund us our parking fees. We were in an ocean front room that they charged $130 a night for, and there was not even a coffee pot, microwave, or hair dryer. The sliding glass door in our room kept sticking, but they sent someone right up to make it better. The beds were hard as ROCKS. Horrible. The front desk told us we could get wi-fi in our rooms if we went on the internet and paid $7 for 24 hours. We did that, got internet for 30 minutes, then the site never worked again. The phone number on that site was invalid. The front desk gave us the man's name/number who supposedly ran that wi-fi service. We left 2 messages, but he never called us back. The manager said he left a message and never got a return call back either. And they recommend this service at the front desk when you check in?

The Cleaning Ladies are Great, and very Friendly too! We meet Our Friends at the Makai every year. We are the Monthly Makia's. Also the Wonderful people and familys that come back each year. It is a Special Friendship. This year we had to leave 2 and a half weeks early because an Family Emercency, anI tell you on 1 hours notice the Staff was Wonderful to us. We take our dog Cori every year also and of course all the staff know her, they are so nice to her and Cori eats it up. I could go On and On about the Makia but I think you get the picture. Worked out well for us.
By ,
The Makia is old and could use some renovating but the price was just right for us. The room had fresh paint and carpet. Over all it was very clean if you can get past the out dated quality. Wonderful location, close to everything yet just far enough out of Daytona for a good quiet nights sleep. We were there with our bikes for Bike Week but are not night life people. We kept the sliding patio door open and enjoyed the sound of the waves on the beach. Very soothing. With the sun setting behind our building, we were able to enjoy sitting on the patio out of the blazing Fla sun. Bike trailer parking is directly across the street and they had 24 hour security in the lot. We felt very comfortable and plan to return next year.
