Decent Resort for Those with Low Expectations
My husband and I just returned from a week's stay at the Golden Parnassus in Cancun. We booked our trip through Apple Vacations and did not know our hotel until we arrived, which was fine with us. A bit about us to give you insight into our trip perspectives, we are 30-35 year old couple from the US that typically stays at one moderate/upscale all-inclusive resort per year. For the past several years we have been going to the Dominican Republic, specifically Punta Cana.
When we arrived we found the hotel clean and orderly, although a bit dated and small. We upgraded our room to a "suite" which for $50/day meant that we had a beautiful ocean view and a refrig. The room itself was acceptable, although not very large and a bit worn. Unfortunately, we did not realize until day 5 that "High" and "Low" on the A/C were reversed, so I would suggest checking that in your room! The food at the resort was decent and better than average at the specialty restaurants. My husband struck a friendship early with Fermin at the bar, so that ensured us great drinks throughout our stay and Fermin nice tips from us. The beach and pool areas seemed nice and the water was beyond beautiful. This alone made the trip worthwhile.
The biggest issue that we had during our stay was with the management of the hotel and the fitness room. On the first complete day of our trip, I went down to check out the fitness room. Being a person who typically exercises 5 or more days a week, I knew that "Tequila volleyball" was not going to cut it for me. I was pleasantly surprised to find a nice workout room with functional air conditioning. When I returned later that day to work out, the entire room was torn to shreds, equipment was covered, floor was missing (yes, missing), water/plaster was removed. The sign on the door indicated "Fitness room will be closed for 4 days for repair." I was concerned with this, so I asked about it at the front desk. The front desk of course knew nothing about this and referred me to the activities staff. Of course the activities staff knew nothing about this and referred me to the hotel manager, Mario Davila. The hotel manager and I spoke and he was completely rude and basically told me that he; did not know about the room being repaired, had nothing to do with the room begin repaired, would not set up an alternate place for people to exercise and ended the conversation telling me to "deal with it". He further suggested that I run on the beach instead (the beach is small and it was 95 degrees our entire stay with a low in the high 70s). Of course on our last day of our trip (Day 5 for the fitness room repairs), I stopped to check out the room and it was still in a state of complete disrepair and it appeared that no work had occured since Day 1. I would suspect that it will be out of commission for a good part of Sept.
Besides the manager, the stay was overall nice. We typically go on vacation to relax and found that Punta Cana is more hospitable to that than Cancun is. We ended up spending a lot of time going on tours, walking, shopping and such in Cancun, which was fun but perhaps less relaxing than I would have liked. We do not plan to return to Cancun and will likely end up in Punta Cana for future vacations.
