Description

Away from the ordinary Banff hotels, Buffalo Mountain Lodge lies on the gentle slopes of Tunnel Mountain, which native people called 'sleeping buffalo', only minutes from downtown Banff. The Rocky Mountains have long been an area of great significance to our native peoples. The valleys were places of ceremony and celebration; the lakes and mineral springs offered rejuvenation for mind, body and spirit. The Main Lodge complements its natural setting with square timber, post and beam construction, and high open ceilings. Decor pays tribute to old-world craftsmanship, from custom made cherry, pine and bent-willow furnishings to copper and glass light fixtures. Simple, elegant design is a hallmark of the resort, and symbolizes the lifestyle at the Lodge. It includes a charming lounge with a huge fieldstone fireplace, dining room, and conference rooms. The property's amenities include free parking, internet, a restaurant, lounge with fireplace, indoor fitness room, steam room, and an outdoor hot tube. There are 108 rooms at the hotel. Standard room amenities include a balcony/patio, wood burning fireplace, private bathroom, hairdryer, iron, ironing board, coffeemaker, alarm clock radio, feather duvet and pillows, and cable TV.

Great time, worth the money
By ,
Great rooms w/ heated floors, spaceous washrooms and big fireplaces. Perfect view from the balcony, close to trails and minutes from main street banff. Food could be a little better, but many restaraunts and bars nearby. I recommend this resort for anyone, anytime. Worth the money in my opinion! I cannot wait to go back.

Shabby and overpriced
By ,
I can't understand the favourable comments about this place. I was there in September 2007. I just had a bad feeling about it as soon as I arrived and tried to get out of my booking without success. Perhaps my room was not one of the deluxe ones referred to by other reviewers, I don't know, but it was shabby and dingy and the furnishings looked like they were twenty years old. The drab bed cover looked as if it had just been thrown on to the bed - there was nothing attractive (other than the view) and luxurious about the place in spite of the high price. The furnishings were cheap and shoddy. I chose this place above many others in Banff and pre-booked, even though it was one of the more expensive places to stay. As I was staying two days, I decided it was worth the splurge on the Lodge. When I complained on leaving, they asked what the problem was. I replied that if they did not recognize that the room was not up to scratch and greatly overpriced, then there was no point in discussing it. They said they would give me a 10% reduction, but later on checking the bill, I found that I had paid the full price. An all-round con job. Other much cheaper hotels I stayed at in Canada (sometimes at a third of the cost) were outstanding. This one was definitely not. You have been warned.

Off the beaten path

This hotel is one of the best in Banff. This was one of the nicest rooms I have stayed anywhere. I would suggest you splurge and upgrade to one the deluxe rooms, with heated floors in the bathrooms! The lodge is spread out over several acres. Parking spaces are small and can be an issue if you have a large vehicle. The city bus stops right across from the property so you can enjoy the night life without driving. You will hear many nice things about the restaurant. It is a good place to eat, but for the money, it is not the best value for your money. I would save your money and eat a better meal for less money in town.

Restauant Regrets
By ,
Previewing the menu we were excited about the game choices. We were equally disappointed afterwards. As we were enjoying a relaxing weekend, we were in no hurry and the restaurant wasn't busy. We specifically told our waiter "Chris" that we were in no rush. He was, even though he told us it would be no problem to take our time as there would be no later sitting. He would not leave us alone and kept trying to get us to order our meal. Four times we told him we were in no rush. After ordering drinks, after ordering appetizers, after ordering wine and before our main course was ordered. Though cost of the entrees was not a concern, it turned out to be too pricey for the portions - especially the venison and caribou. We ordered med/rare and my wife's meat was RAW in the middle.Chris claimed to be an expert on everything and argued that her meat WAS medium. Overall it was a very rushed, uncomfortable and unpleasant experience. Overall, because of

Great place to stay but don't eat here
By ,
Great place to stay although a little out of the way. Having a car is a must but the tradeoff is worth it. Quiet and great scenery make for a wonderful retreat. Stayed in a deluxe (average) room which was absolutely wonderful complete with a Wood-burning fireplace and quite spacious. Ask for an upstairs room as soundproofing from upstairs is not the best. Overall, a rustic place to stay but we did have a terrible experience in the dining room. Might have been a fluke but very small portions, lousy service and a wine list that had only three reds under $100 made for the worst meal on the trip. The game menu sounded delicious but did not deliver at all! Left the restaurant feeling ripped off and hungry! Overall the resort is a great value with gorgeous surroundings, well looked after suites with fireplaces and overall good service, but go into town for some fantastic food and shopping.

Love this place
By ,
The Buffalo Mountain Lodge is a great retreat. You have your privacy, fireplace, a nice walk into town, excellent food at the restuarant. What more can you ask for? It is very clean and the employees are there to please. We have been there three times and will continue to visit the Lodge.

would recommend it!
By ,
loved everything! we were there for a 3 day vacation and loved the service, location, athmosphere and overall feel! a short 10 minutes walk to downtown Banff, it was great to be closer to the mountain where we enjoyed watching some wild animals in the early morning. The dinner we had in the main dining room was wonderful and the service was perfect. The ski shuttle picked us up in front of the hotel every morning, and we truly enjoyed every aspect of our stay. Will certainly go back!

Top of the Line
By ,
We stayed at Buffalo Mountain during the busiest time of year(week after Christmas)and never felt like just a guest. We were treated like Kings by the staff and no request was to large or small. Every night the fire place was cleaned out and new logs and paper were put in place, so all we had to do was strike a match and have a nice fire. They had very nice pillows, sheets. The resturant was first class all the way and was the best meal we had while staying in banff and we ate at all of the trendy places. The view from our room was awesome and we were just far enough away from the hussle and bussle of downtown banff that we had time to destress a bit after a day of shopping or skiing.
