Be Wary

We were looking for a place away from Waikiki and weren't looking for high surf. On line and in discussion with the reservation agent, this sounded like the place. At $125 per night (agreed, not really high as Hawaii rates go), we expected something more than we got. This is a 1950s vintage resort that hasn't seen much updating since. It was evident that we had made a mistake as we drove down the lane to get there (cars up on blocks and the reception area). To be fair, sheets and towels were clean, but the positives stop there. A hole in the front porch that was covered with carpet, a board on the floor that I suspect was covering a hole in the floor in the bathroom, railing that was rotting away, poor parking, overgrown "landscapng", worn amenities, a Super 8 quality breakfast, noise from our adjoining rooms were all a part of the Hawaiian charm. It was soooo nice that we spent all of our time except for sleeping, somewhere else. We have been travelling the world for more than 40 years and have stayed at a wide variety of places, good and bad. I, personally, have not been in a place as run-down since I stayed in a room for $5 per night over 30 years ago! Motel 6, Ibis, Knights Inn, former communist hotels, hostels all rate in front of the quality of this place.
Other reviews rave about this place. People seemed nice enough. "Old World charm" and "away from the hustle of Waikiki" mean just flat worn out. Stay there if you like this sort of thing, but don't if you want any sort of quality. My own fault, but I feel taken.
