Great for a group of College Students
By ,
I stayed at El Canario By The Lagoon for a week with 22 college students and a fellow college staff member. The staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms were adequate and clean. When we had needs of having a room for a meeting, the staff provided the breakfast room. The price was reasonable, and the location is very good. It is not a Marriot, not does it cost like a Marriot. If I pass through San Juan again with another group of college students, I will probably consider El Canario By the Lagoon again. It was all that could have expected.

The reviewer that stayed on the 10th floor???
By ,
you gave a bad review of El Canario By The Lagoon saying that you stayed on the 10th floor and heard music from a bar across the street all night. This hotel only has 5 floors so I doubt you stayed there. Please recheck the name of your hotel. Couldn't be the El Canario By The Lagoon if you stayed on the 10th floor.

Horrible Customer Service
By ,
I stayed at the Canario by the Lagoon for 2 nights. I was charged twice for the same room, and also was charged an extra $109- without explanation. That brought the cost for my stay $300 more than what was on the receipt I was given. When I called to resolve this issue, the motel had only charged me an extra $109. They said they would refund this to my account. By the next day, they had charged me for the room twice, and, according to my bank, had made no attempt at refunding anything to my account. The employees at the Canario were rude to me and stopped taking my calls regarding the matter. It appears that they do not care about their customers once they have their customers' credit card numbers. Never stay at any of the Canario hotels. On another note, the Canario by the Lagoon boasts that every room has a view of either the lagoon or the ocean. This is misleading at best, and possibly an outright lie. I stayed in room 405 and had to lean over the edge of the safety rails on the room's "balcony" to see a tiny sliver of the lagoon. To recap: never stay at the Canario by the Lagoon unless you don't mind spending the money for a three star hotel and staying at a motel, and unless you like being treated rudely by the staff.

I would stay there again.
By ,
The best part about our stay was the friendly and very helpful staff!! The room was simple, clean, and had a small fridge. Good water pressure in the shower for those with long hair! The location was close to Old San Juan and a few minutes walk to the ocean, many resturants and stores, but we were on the 4th floor and didn't have a view of ocean or Lagoon.

OK if you are a sound sleeper
By ,
Great location and decent price for a night or two. Problem was at 4:oo am I was awaken by the music coming from the bar across the street. I called the front desk thinking it was an out-of-control guest party, but was told otherwise. We were staying on the tenth floor, windows closed and A/C on and still I could practically feel the BOOM BOOM monotonous beat of the disco. Ugh! I think it stopped at about 5 am although the front desk admitted it sometimes continued through 7 in the morning! I was miserable! But if you are a heavy sleeper, check it out.

We'll stay there next time!
By ,
I did not expect opulence and I got exactly what I expected at this hotel. It was clean, friendly, safe and in a great location. The breakfast was actually better than expected and they even gave beach towels. I don't have any complaints about this hotel and will go back next time I'm in Puerto Rico. I also like the fact that the room had a fridge and balcony. It was close to a great little Mexican resturant, with a nice atmosphere, by the water, called Hacienda. They have the best Margeuritas at the best price.

NO DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH HERE!!!
By ,
The hotel itself is a great place to stay if you only want to stay for a few days and if you don't want luxury. The room was bare bones basic, but clean and the AC unit worked. No amenities, no bells and whistles the exterior of the building is more attractive than the actual rooms. Good location everything is near by. Just watch out for your wallet and heed this warning. MAKE SURE YOU GET THE NAME OF THE PERSON TAKING YOUR RESERVATION!!! I was quoted $85 over the phone and was charged $114 when I got there. The guy on the phone told me one thing and the front desk person charged me something else. The guy at the front desk was very indignant and condescending with my husband denying any culpability and refusing to recognize the mistake they clearly made. The prices were not posted so I would have no idea what they were unless someone there had told me. We couldn't do anything about it because the manager was not there and we were only staying for a night. Also the other hotels around it were booked solid (that is how I ended up at the Canario in the first place) and even if they weren't they were way more than the Canario ($250 and up per night) The Canario is taking advantage of being located next to the ever more attractive Marriot. The Canario is not worth the $114 they charge, but is not a dump and fine if you don't want to spend the money. In short you get what you pay for there is no diamond in the rough here.
