Not What We Expected !
We took my parents for their anniversary and were very dissappointed in the room choice. It was at a separate area away from the office which made us feel as if we had been "booted" from the original property, but now we understand the motel we stayed at, had actually been a motel at some point, and Johnsons had merely acquired it. The staff was very friendly and accomodating, but our room was in poor condition. The beds were so uncomfortable the 4 of us complained for weeks of back problems, we could only associate with the old and uneven beds. Our bathroom had a few bugs in the bathtub, and a few loose strands of hair around the sink area. The bathroom was small, but we made due with the 4 of us doing well taking turns, there just was not enough towels and we constantly had to track down the cleaning employees to obtain additional towels and toilet paper. There was a small 4 cup coffee maker in the room, but honestly, we did our best to sterilize it before using as my father insisted on coffee first thing in the morning, but it wasn't hot. And speaking of hot - the fridge didn't decide to keep our canned drinks and bottled water cold, until after 2 days, how frustrating, especially since the ice machine was downstairs and clearly across the entire length of the motel. The carpet was dirty and had "lifted" in many areas. The area encircling our air conditioning unit had absolutely NO caulking so you could actually feel the wind/chill and the noise coming in from around the unit. We did appreciate having elevators since my parents are elderly and not in the best health, but our room was located along the back wall, tucked in a corner with outside corridors. I must admit, when coming in at night, we all felt very uncomfortable, so safety was certainly an issue for us. We loved having a balcony to get outside and soak up the fall air and afternoon sunshine, but it overlooked the noisy parking lot (and pool in the summer), so this would not be an option is you wanted to get away for some much needed peace and quiet. At $75-$90 a night per room - there clearly are better, cleaner options inside Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge that we will seek during future jaunts to the Great Smoky Mountains, and not waste our time staying here again - that is until they do some major remodeling. We absolutely LOVED the close proximity access Johnsons was to everywhere we wanted to go; the Pancake Pantry for breakfast and the Village to shop to downtown Gatlinburg. I hate to be too terribly rude, because the 4 of us are the best of friends & I realize I'm not going to have my parents forever. Gatlinburg is our favorite vacation spot and we did make a ton of new memories.
