Great things do not last long
On the whole, the service was efficient and smooth; in particular, a staff member named Dear was very helpful, always finding solutions to questions and queries. Having traveled extensively in Asia, I would of course expect top class, uncompromising service with all sophisticated, five star hotels. To this end, I was sorely disappointed and perturbed by my experience when I was checking out after my six night stay.
My initial two nights were spent in a Courtyard Villa as a package. Following this, myself and my partner moved into the main building for the remainder of our stay. I took the pair of slippers to wear from the Villa during my stay. I packed these with me when I was leaving, as I often have done before. (I presume used slippers are not passed on from guest to guest! Also based on my previous experience with other 5 or higher star hotels they even give it to their guest as a compliment since it will be discarded. Furthermore for the price you pay, I will expect all new guests should have a pair of brand new slippers) When I was checking out, the reception staff noted to me that the slippers had been taken from the Villa, and that if I wished to keep them, I would have to pay. For some reason there was no mention of the slippers the previous day when my partner (white caucasian) was paying for the bill! In addition, extra charges will be incurred if guest would like to take the slippers was not indicated anywhere.
I returned the used slippers since I did not want to incur an extra cost onto my bill, which already amounted to over 41,000 baht. Sadly, a bitter taste was left in my mouth, and the word that came to mind as I left the beautiful, lavish surroundings was cheap.
Early in our stay, we enjoyed the place so much we had a good detailed look at the Crowne Plaza residences by the seafront, but its funny how the smallest thing can be, in fact, a big thing. With all luxury hotels, attention to detail is the gold standard. As a new, luxury hotel at Karon Beach, perhaps the Crowne Plaza could allow the guests to take home the flimsy slippers. Besides, it would be a walking advertisement.
