Return to Athenaeum Hotel main page

This historic “grand dame” hotel on the grounds of the Chautauqua Institution was built in 1881. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it was the first hotel in the world to have electric lights, courtesy of Thomas Edison, son-in-law of Chautauqua Institution founder Lewis Miller. This elegant wood-frame hotel, which has 160 guest rooms, overlooks Chautauqua Lake and offers yesterday's charm with modern amenities. All room rates are based on the American Plan, which includes three meals daily. Many notable people have stayed here over the years, including Teddy Roosevelt, Ulysses S. Grant, Susan B. Anthony and, more recently, Bill Clinton. - Christine A. Smyczynski
