We wish we could move the cottage home!
We stayed in cottage #4, a two-bedroom. Our entire party just loved it. It was just the right size, and was quite tastefully appointed. We only stayed one night, as we were travelling, but would have enjoyed spending more time there. The director of the plantation lives in a converted barn right next to the cottage, so we were able to get a little history about it. It's an old over-seer's house and it was moved onto the property around the turn of the century (1900). It has the most original architecture of any of the cottages, as it's interior walls are still the wood boards, rather than plaster or drywall. While it's not large, it has ample space, and feels quite comfortable. It had everything we needed. The bathroom has a claw-foot tub (with shower), and supplies more towels and beautiful soaps than you could possibly use.
We arrived late in the afternoon, and there aren't many restaurants or stores in the area, so we hustled into Vacherie to get supplies for dinner before they closed. We were able to get all we needed for a great meal: sausages with sauteed onions and peppers (they sell it already chopped up, they call it "creole seasoning", fried potatoes, and corn on the cob. Not fancy, but we really enjoyed it in our cozy atmosphere. We wish we would have arrived earlier to take better advantage of exploring the grounds.
