frankly my dear.........
By srich539, 8/5/08
My teenage son and I toured this home recently and found it elegant and breathtaking. It was a rainy day when we toured, making the oaks appear very lush and green, this place is a great for pictures of a classic Southern plantation, It was easy to imagine being transported back in time to a grand party or Barbque.

We wish we could move the cottage home!
By Shawn Devoid, 6/10/05
We stayed in cottage #4, a two-bedroom. Our entire party just loved it. It was just the right size, and was quite tastefully appointed. We only stayed one night, as we were travelling, but would have enjoyed spending more time there. The director of the plantation lives in a converted barn right next to the cottage, so we were able to get a little history about it. It's an old over-seer's house and it was moved onto the property around the turn of the century (1900). It has the most original architecture of any of the cottages, as it's interior walls are still the wood boards, rather than plaster or drywall. While it's not large, it has ample space, and feels quite comfortable. It had everything we needed. The bathroom has a claw-foot tub (with shower), and supplies more towels and beautiful soaps than you could possibly use. We arrived late in the afternoon, and there aren't many restaurants or stores in the area, so we hustled into Vacherie to get supplies for dinner before they closed. We were able to get all we needed for a great meal: sausages with sauteed onions and peppers (they sell it already chopped up, they call it "creole seasoning", fried potatoes, and corn on the cob. Not fancy, but we really enjoyed it in our cozy atmosphere. We wish we would have arrived earlier to take better advantage of exploring the grounds.

Yesterday feel with today's luxury....
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/21/04
....well, almost luxury. We stayed in a "slave cabin", one of the "old" buildings, not one of the newly constructed cabins. It was pleasantly decorated, the rooms were large, comfy furniture; just a slightly sloping floor at the back...no big deal (knew it was an old building when I rented it). Right across the street from the charming little restaurant. I absolutely loved this place-- partly because being in the plantation frame of mind encourages thinking below the surface..... the whole experience of being in a little cabin behind the main house, thinking what luxury we had there, and how absurd it was in the 1800s for plantation owners to live up in the main house in what was then considered sumptuous luxury, knowing their slave workers were housed in rough-hewn and frequently downright abysmal accommodations. What hideous people the wealthy plantation owners must have been (Oak Alley's included - just plain evil they must have been). Well, I digress. This location is worth spending an overnight. Great breakfast! Lovely grounds.
