Comfortable, modest hotel, central location
My wife and I stayed in this hotel for 10 days in September, 2005. We had booked a suite, and it ended up being the largest room in the hotel, for about $100/night. The room was of good size, the bed comfy, and the staff were really helpful and accomodating. There was a pleasant little terrace with french doors, but the bathroom was a bit shabby (we Americans are always spoiled when it comes to plumbing, I think). I'll admit the maid that covered our room was hit-and-miss in a comical way (the room was always spotless, but she'd forget something different every day like remove all the drinking glasses or forget to leave any towels!). Any error was immediately and cheerfully corrected if we called the desk. Room service was cheap and pretty good, although the menu is limited by the small kitchen. In fact, there was a free buffet breakfast every morning, but we just ordered room service. For a few dollars it was nice to luxuriate in the room. There is what I believe is a small Catholic college or high school across the street--the only impact of this was that we were able to pick up their wireless internet signal for free as the hotel had only dialup. We happened to get a bad flu while we were there, and the staff were very helpful in getting a doctor in to see my wife, and even offering to help us in sorting out prescriptions, etc. The location was good, central enough to walk just about anywhere (although taxi's were plentiful and cheap). We walked over to the Alvear palace several times to eat at the amazing restaurants there. Lots of nice shops and restaurants within a few blocks. We felt a little like we were living more like the locals, rather than being in the thick of the tourist district. A little old woman we met on the street in front of the hotel (we petted her dog) even invited us to her home for tea. We'd happily go back. We thought this hotel was exceptionally good value.
