The Lantern Inn, Hill City

Of all the Hotels we stayed in on our vacation, this one was by far the best. It was clean and friendly and everything you need for a home away from home. The owners went above and beyond to help us when we rolled in late on our bicycles and everything was closed, they cooked us a pizza from their own food so we could eat. It's just hard to find service like that anymore. We stayed at Best Western that didn't hold a match to this one! Highly reccommend it.

Charlie & Janet McKay provide the ultimate service. What ever your needs are, they will do their best to help. Cleanliness at the Hotel is second to no other hotel anywhere. The way they do business you will meet people from all over the world. Life is built on relationships and everyone needs to start one at the Lantern Inn in Hill City, S.D. I vote 105 out of 100. It is that enjoyable.

It was our first vacation in quite some time, so we decided to spend our money on the tourist sites and not on a room that we wouldn't be spending much time in. This motel was perfect for us. Centrally located for most of the attractions. 25 miles or less to almost everything. The room was clean and simple. Color TV, A/C, comfy bed, shower, small fridge and a microwave. Who needs more? The owners were very nice and very helpful. We could have spent more, but why? We weren't there to spend all day in the room.. We never tried the pool or hot tub, but they were available. I would recommend this motel to anyone who wants a good nights rest without spending an arm or a leg. It's not fancy, but, it's affordable and relaxing. The Lantern Inn is proof that sometimes you get more, even though you spend less.

For 17 years now we travel twice a year through the USA and had 38 states, incl. Alaska already. But you know, this is really the best place to be. In all categories they score a fat 10 points out of ten (European counting). The friendly owners (has become friends) and are really wunderfull in everything. Keep going Charlie and Janet, we love to see you again on August 26. Can't wait !!! Your friends from The Netherlands, Harley Babe and BLT King. We love you guys.

Very motorcylce friendly place to stay. Charlie and Janet make you feel like you are family. Clean rooms, great advice for day trips, great little town. Only place to stay for us.

When you stay at the Lantern Inn you are treated as family. The rooms are very comfortable. We have been staying there for years and look forward to many more. Park outside your door makes it easy on carrying in luggage. Charlie and Janet make you feel right at home. The Inn is right in the heart of the Black Hills. Downtown is within walking distance yet far enough away that you don't have the feel of staying in town. The rates are easy on your pocket book too. When we go to the black hills we stay with friends,( Charley and Janet) at the lantern Inn. When your there your at home.

They have become like family.... not the kind of family that you have to put up w/ but the kind of family that you can't wait to get back and see. The place is very clean, clean, clean, and it is located right in the heart of everything that is exciteing and entertaining. They definately go the extra mile for their guests whom they treat as family also. Of all our travels this is our favorite spot.

I am at a loss of words. Our vacation in the Black Hills was great. Our stay at the Lantern Inn was a big part of it. My 10 yr old son said it was like staying at Grandmas. My 13 yr old wants to go back next year. I have never been treated better. This is a great big thumb in the nose to all those "Big Box" chains. The Lantern Inn is a step back in time to a place where you are a name and not a number. A Big thank-you to the owners Charlie & Janet. The beds were very comfortable (better than mine). The whole place was clean and well taken care of. Centrally located to all of the Black Hills. Our next trip will definitely include time at the Lantern Inn.

Charlie & Janet are fantastic as innkeepers. We enjoyed our "past-the-season" vacation to the max. The room was clean and homey-w/refig and microwave! The dining advice was outstanding. Alpine's prime rib is worth the wait-get there early and enjoy a brew in the lounge and you'll get seated first thing. The Desperato, a new resteraunt, was good-buff burgers were fantastic. Hill City is in a great location to hit the local sites. We especially enjoyed the Rushmore lighting ceremony-very moving! Especially, asking the veterans to come down to the stage and helpend the ceremony! In the off season ask questions as many places are on their own schedules and open and close at non-standard times.

The Lantern Inn was a wonderful place to stay and we'll definitely be back! Charlie, the innkeeper, was very knowledgeable about the area and helped us plan a couple of wonderful day trips (don't miss that scenic drive through Custer State Park on your way to Rushmore!). At the Lantern Inn the rates are more than reasonable, it's centrally located to all the area attractions and the hospitality his first class all the way!
