This hidden gem is a great deal!
By Kate, 10/1/09
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Karakahl Inn and will definitely return! If you’ve read any of the other reviews, you’re probably feeling a little wary, but the thing to keep in mind is that you’re going to pay about $50 a night, which is a steal for a hotel room. Just go into it understanding that the reason the price is so low is that a lot of the extras and the pizzazz that this hotel featured in it heyday are gone. You’ll still get a spacious, clean room and bathroom. You’ll probably have minimal neighbors (and minimal noise), and if you arrive with a sense of humor, you’ll have fun! We got a kick out of all the derelict touches, like the turbine engine-like fan in the bathroom, the florescent “Frank Lloyd light” that ran the length of the room, and the gi-normous abandoned pool. Parts of the hotel look haunted, which I kind of loved. The location was ideal, the slanted wood ceiling in our room was very cool, and of course, the architecture of the rest of the place was interesting. The beds were comfy, the shower was warm (not hot, but comfortable), the host was endearing, and the TV worked just fine.

Very Disappointing
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/18/08
After hearing for weeks about how great this place was when my significant other's parents would take all the kids for a weekend of fun and swimming.... All I can say is WOW! The outside is basically falling apart and from the cars in the parking lot, it appeared that people were staying at length. If you expect to take kids for a swim in the pool, don't bother. The pool was "closed for remodeling" and that may be so, but it appeared not to have been in any condition for use for quite a while. On a good note... the room was clean! And, It had appeared that they had made an effort to have the room ready upon arrival. It's in a perfect location and if you're only staying one night and don't expect any frills of a pool, restaurant etc.. it's a great value.

How the mighty have fallen
By flutepilot, 11/8/05
There was a time when this property was fantastic. It had a restaurant, lounge, sauna, clean and well kept rooms, etc. This property no longer has any of the above. It is run down; the staff is virtually non-existant, and we were told that "we closed the sauna a year ago because kids were trashing it". There was plaster coming off the walls in the hallway. We got there to find the one person staff gone, leaving a 'back in 15 minutes' note. There was no TV guide to tell you what was where in the 15 or so channels available - we had to guess. The blower which made the heater work made a buzz so loud that sleep was impossible in our first room, and we had to be moved. Yes, the room was inexpensive. The bed was comfortable. The location is fine. Other than that, I cannot recommend this hotel.

THE place to stay near Madison
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/5/05
We stayed at the Karakalh Inn during a snowboarding trip to Tyrol Basin. Finding a decent hotel in the middle of the country far from a major highway is hard. It was close to many good things such as Mcdonalds, a gas station, grocery store, and a Culvers. We stayed during the middle of the week so there was barely anyone there. Cool 1950's architecture are everywhere from the lounge to the pool. Plenty of vending machines and a game room to keep entertained. Queen sized beds, real thermostat, and a space heater (nice for drying wet gloves and hats) were a nice touch. Being designed by Frank Lloyd Wright made the stay that much more surreal. The knobs on the faucet turned endlessless for 360 degrees and the heater in the bathroom made showering awesome.
