Rude Staff! Would not recommend to others!

We stayed there late July. I specifically requested a non smoking room. The patio door was open when we arrived so we didn't notice it immediately but by evening after having the door closed, we could smell stale smoke odor as well as a strong "musty" odor throughout the entire room. I also saw what I believe to be cigarette hole burns on the carpet near the table. The room was dark and dingy, poorly lit, an ample amount of dirt in the corners of the bathroom floor and the carpet was dirty.
The balcony was almost sitting right on top of the main road going through town, no where near the shoreline of Lake Huron (although you could see the lake from the balcony) as their advertisement states. There was a steady flow of traffic both day and night, which made it was fairly noisey.
Early morning of the second day of our stay, the toliet overflowed. I called the front desk and the hostess said that they didn't have anyone available to come fix it. I called an hour later and she said the same thing. However, she did say that someone would be happy to "drop off" a plunger so that "we" could plung the toliet. About an hour later the plunger arrived. We plunged the toilet but it overflowed again. Because we had already planned spend the day at Mackinaw Island, we just left the room. When we returned that evening we went downstairs to the public restroom as needed. When we checked out the next morning, I pointed out these issues to the hostess and her reply to me was "why didn't you ask to be moved"? I told her that the reason we didn't ask to be moved is that we got back to our room fairly late that evening and we were leaving the next morning, so why move all our things to a room for such a short period of time? She more or less said "too bad, don't bother me". She acted as if it were our fault that the toliet overflowed when I mentioned to her that they shoudn't expect their guests to have to plunge the toilet. As we were departing, I looked in to some of the rooms that had the door open waiting to be cleaned. Believe me....they didn't look any better than the room we were in. I would never stay there again and not recommend this place to others. The public areas look OK but the rooms I actually saw are in poor condition. Be smart and ask to see a room BEFORE you give them your hard earned money.....you may just change your mind. Oh, by the way, did I mention that they are "pet friendly"? There were dogs walking the halls and going to the bathroom all over the lawn...there was no designated dog area outside. Could that be part of the odor problem in the rooms?
