What a quaint place to stay. We enjoyed our stay and will be back for sure! The staff was very helpful too. Our rooms were neat and tidy and the ice machine always full! Thank you to the employee that brought us extra pillows!

Very clean and affordable
By A Yahoo! User, 05/12/08
I love the friendly people that own it. My husband and I usually go in Oct. and July. We go in Oct. for our wedding anniversary and in July for our family vacation and we always stay at the Duke of Dare because it is clean and it is a good location. Also the owners are really nice and they always remember us from year to year. Thanks Duke of Dare

Good bang for your buck
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/24/06
nothing fancy but clean. reasonable rate, not on beach (5 miles away) but on sound side of the outerbanks. lost colony 2 mi, waterfront 1/2 mile great place to walk. good value especially for a family with kids. plenty of eating places close by. town has good family values and this motel reflects that way of thinking. honest friendly owners.

The absolute worst experience
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/20/06
The management had my customers arrested in their rooms by police with guns drawn and dogs. One of the two guys was asleep in his underwear. They were dragged off to jail because of a noise complaint. Rooms need to be refurbished. Owner is totally unreasonable.

It was almost brand spanking new
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/25/06
Back in the day, this was a upper scale motel. I'm so glad to read it's still in business. My family spent a holiday there - taking in The Lost Colony where a guy spilled cigarette ashes in my brother's hair (!), the room a/c was unbelievably, deliciously cold (a/cs were luxuries) and the furnishings were the most contemporary, the pool was to die for (although my nonswimming brother did fall in the deep end), and we talked about that vacation for years to come. Maybe I'll take my kids this summer for a stroll down memory lane. Pool still looks good in the pictures. Retro, huh?

Stayed there several times...
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/14/06
This is a good place to stay if you are fishing in the Nags Head area. Its old and worn, but works for me. I can understand Sarah looking for something else if "nice" is what you are after. The Duke has a great cancellation policy that allows you to cancel up till 5PM the day of your visit without penalty. This is great for me because the weather can be so unpredictable at the beach. The folks at the front desk are great, and the room rate won't break the bank.

Cheap Place Near the Beach
By RM, 09/23/05
My wife and I were arriving a day before we could stay at our beach house and we wanted to hit the Weeping Radish. So we found the cheapest place we could that would let you stay for only 1 weekend night - ye olde Duke of Dare. The Sheets were clean - the room, well worn. But it was safe and quiet. The only draw back for us was that they have no non-smoking rooms; the room smelled of stale cigarette smoke. It was a no frills kind of place. But it still had a pretty nice (and clean) pool. The place had character and was just what we needed for 1 night. I recommend it if you are not staying too long. If you are a smoker, stay as long as you want a well worn place close to the beach. Make sure to visit Weeping Radish Brew Hause & Restaurant - a little piece of Bavaria right on Manteo (pronounced 'Maneo' - "small town.") rmw

Worst Motor Lodge Ever!!!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/22/04
THIS PLACE IS AWFUL!!!! Our family had a reservation there for our family vacation. We expected a nice peaceful hotel, but we were wrong! As soon as we got there, we searched through the streets of Manteo for anything but this hotel! Thank Goodness we found somewhere else so much nicer!

Older motel offers no-frills value for today
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/19/04
I work all over the Southeast, and when I needed a place to stay in Manteo, I did what I usually do: searched for an older motel.

The Duke Of Dare, built in 1964, doesn't offer a lot of features; even hooking up to the internet is a challenge. What it does offer is a modest but clean room at a very, very good price. Moreover, it does it in the midst of a resort area where a fairly typical (nothing special) room goes for $100 or more a night easily.

It is located on the main highway right in the center of Manteo, but is surprisingly quiet. Restaurants, a few attractions, and banks are within 5 minutes drive. The people at the front desk are courteous and helpful.

It is a godsend for a business person on a budget, and I'd stay there again. In fact, I intend to do just that later this month.
