Canyon Motel, Wellsboro

The entire staff is very rude and snotty. The housekeepers don't clean the rooms to say so. The pool is horribly dirty and the boss treats his employees like dirt. I saw a housekeeper who was pregnant get treated like she was lower than dirt because she was struggling. He treated her like she didn't exist and yelled at her when she had called her doctor to see if she needed to come to the er. Yes I witnessed him yelling at her because she was trying to make sure that her unborn child was ok. He is an arrogant, self-centered, pompus ass who should not be running a hotel. I would recommend not staying there at all. Now the hotel is nothing but gas and oil workers who leave the rooms gross and the houskeepers don't even clean the mess up when the workers leave.. This place has gone horribly down hill.

My wife and I have been visiting the Wellsboro area since we married in 1995 (2 hr trip from home) and almost always stayed at "The Canyon". Great service, clean, well-stocked rooms, and reasonable prices went out the window when new management took over in '09. Just stayed there 5/20/11-5/22/11(after having 2nd thoughts due to the last 2 stays there...) and was truly disappointed. First, the woman at the counter said our reservation had been cancelled and re-entered for 2 weeks later. Couldn't tell us who or why. We gave her our confirmation number, which evidently they just pull out of thin air and give over the phone because it didn't mean a thing in their computer system. After telling us "sorry, I can't help you", we made a bit of a stand, at which time she rolled her eyes and called her "boss". We were then told the room we wanted (king bed w/ whirlpool-same room we've stayed in for years) was not available, but we could now have a small room at a *small* discount. Pretty much out of options for 4pm on a Friday, we reluctantly accepted. The room was passable, but not clean. Carpet was dirty and last occupant's toothpick was lying on one of the bedstands. ICK! About 2 hrs later, a knock came on the door and the woman from the front counter was there to tell us that the person in the room we'd reserved wanted to move so we could now have it, for a *small* discount due to the problems. We accepted and moved. Soon saw why the last occupant wanted moved. The carpet was literally sticky with filth, there were ants in the bathroom, and several spiders along the baseboards. One of the bedside lights was out and it was a good thing we brought our own pillows; the ones on the bed (3) were about the size of small throw pillows. We literally slept and sat on towels and wore our shoes to walk anywhere. The pool area was at least as bad. We looked forward to some sauna and pool time but couldn't bring ourselves to get into that water. The locker rooms were dirty and smelly as well. Complain? Expect a patented shoulder shrug and an "I'm sorry". A truly sad, disappointing experience. It pains me to say the next time we visit the area, we will be exploring other lodging options for the first time in 15 yrs. If this post saves just one person or couple from the terrible experience my wife and I had on what was supposed to be a romantic get-away for a long weekend I will be happy I helped. We can all give examples of places where service, etc have eroded somewhat over time, but the Canyon Motel is one that went far beyond eroding, it crashed and burned.

We stayed at the Canyon Motel in years past, however, the motel changed hands in 2009 and the change was not for the best. The friendly family atmosphere disappeared with the previous owners. The rooms are no longer clean, the staff is no longer friendly, the rates are no longer reasonable, the pool/exercise area are extremely dirty. If you are looking for a nice place to stay, this is no longer it. Any reviews on this site prior to 2009 should be ignored due to the ownership change. Try the Microtel in Mansfield. It's a new hotel and is in much better condition than any of the motels in Wellsboro. Unfortunately, we would no longer recommend the Canyon Motel. The Penn Wells Hotel and Lodge are even worse and the Sherwood Motel isn't really any better, just closer to the center of town.

If you are considering a stay at the Canyon Motel - think again! The rooms are not very clean; the walls are thin, we could clearly hear all the conversations in the adjacent rooms; the pool was slimy looking, we didn't even think about getting into the water; the video selection is skimpy; the staff must not live in the area as they were neither knowledgeable nor happy about being asked questions. After one night, we left here and stayed at the Sherwood Motel - not much of an improvement! While a walk on Main Street is like stepping back in time, the street itself does not have a lot to offer - more offices than stores for shopping. The department store merchandise is very overpriced for the quality of items available. We have canceled our autumn visit to Wellsboro and will visit the Berkshires instead!!

Each time we want a get-away we vacation in Wellsboro and stay at the Canyon Motel. We have been very pleased with all its features. My husband loves the fitness area, pool, hot tub and sauna. I enjoy the relaxing atmosphere and friendliness of the employees as well as the other guests. The rooms are those featured in the pictures as we have stayed in some of them....as for size they are very comfortable, not at all small. Our room has always been clean upon arrival. If you are looking for small rooms, try staying at the Wells Penn Hotel (not Lodge)....there you have to sit on the bed (full size) in order to open the dresser....and practically sit in the shower if using the toilet (try not to burn yourself on the radiator on the right of you....you know the one your theigh rests against).... also note the spongy floors. My biggest and only complaint for the Canyon Motel is that I am a handicap person and love a pool but can not use it myself as it lacks stairs for a handicap person to enter it with.

We chose this motel because of the photos on the website. However, the pictures used are not pictures of this motel. When we asked about the rooms shown in the photos, we were told that the website designer just "picked those out". This website is VERY misleading. The rooms are small, not very clean and overpriced for what's offered. The staff is neither knowledgeable nor friendly. The pool is exceptionally filthy. While the location is great, I would not stay at this motel again.

The room we stayed at was great, clean with refrig and microwave., but I do not see how they can keep the pool open. Went over to take a swim the pool was dark green with purple mold spots on top . The water was not even moving looks like they have not run the filter for years stagnet water. The Health Dept should check this out. In the shallow end, when I could see the bottom I think I saw something swimming near the bottom not sure maybe some swamp bugs or worse. Would recoment the motel rooms not the pool.

My significant other and I had stayed here a couple times before new management took over. We loved staying here then because the service was great and the rooms were clean. Everyone at the pool respected each other. When we went more recently with my family, we werent very satisfied. We had a couple things wrong with our room, the staff didn't have the slightest clue what they were doing, and we comlained to one family several times about their rudeness and then went to the desk to make a complaint and they looked at us like we were crazy. Plus the girl whome checked us in failed to make a note that we paid and the next morning we had to argue with someone else for a good 10 minutes about us paying.

This motel changed owners in 2009 and, unfortunately, cleanliness; kindness and quality left with the previous owners. The room was no longer clean, the pool was closed, the video selection was poor, the service was not friendly. While the location is convenient to town, on our future trips we will not be staying at this motel. If the previous owner's read these reviews - we REALLY miss you!!!!!

Staff was rude, place was filthy, could hear the guy snoring below us. The Wellsboro area is beautiful but your stay will be much more pleasant if you stay somewhere else.
