Hope to return
By Sabra, 9/15/08
Really fell in love with Niger and the Grand Hotel was the perfect place to enhance the experience. The staff was very gracious and my room was great. Very clean with all the amenities. Had some of the best fish ever on the patio. Highly recommend.

Grand Hotel
By ROB, 11/30/07
This is a big hotel, but a bit run down. But, it is much more substantial than, say, the Terminus Hotel. The Gaweye is the best "international" style hotel, but the staff and service here are very lax --- it's a strange experience. Actually, this is pretty much the management style in all hotels in Niger. But, if money is not the question, the Gaweye is the best. Regardless, watch out for mosquitoes in the evening at all hotels --- especially those by the river. One sting from a Malaria carrying insect can transmit the disease. You should take your own large mosquito net, because many hotels do not have them, and you should use one for absolute protection. There can easily be these insects in your room and bathroom. Even though the room may be air conditioned, this is not a precaution.

A little expensive for the service
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/24/07
The Grand Hotel is located very centrally and has a beautiful entrance and grounds. It overlooks the Niger river and has a great view. However, the service is not exceptional--I could not get my air conditioning on and had to call the front desk about 3 times for them to finally come down only for them to tell me it was broken. So, I ended up sharing with my co-worker and they charged us extra because there were two of us in the room. Plus, the hallways are always dark and scary. The patio restaurant is nice--it overlooks the river and the food isn't bad. However, they do charge 3,500 CFA ($7) for a couple of tiny scoops of ice cream. The beds were not very firm and my co-worker and I ended up sleeping very close to each other because the middle kept sinking in. The rooms were nice and large, however, and very clean. The bathrooms were nice but I found the bathtubs to be a little scary, as they were elevated a couple of feet off the floor. They do have a bar with WiFi interent. The pool is okay but it's located in the middle of the restaurant patio so everyone can stare at you while they eat. Also, no TP in the pool bathrooms. They also have a play area for kids.

You will be in Love
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/30/06
I recently went back to the Grand Hotel du Niger for a reunion for myself and the most romantic times of my life flashed thru my mind. You see i am alone now but the "love of my life" my beautiful Tangerine was a Nigerine from Niger. We met on the Grand Hotel terrace one evening and while watching the beautiful sunset over the Niger River our eyes met and mine were never distracted for the rest of my life. We danced the evening away that first night in the cool breeze and fell in love for the next 51 years. We often talked about the romantic evening we shared way back when at the Grand and what a special place it was. Reeves, "the waiter of distinction" who never forgot a name. Natewick, the piano player how sang those soft love songs while he watched us fall in love that night. He knew, and told us to enjoy the rest of our lives that wonderful evening. But alas, that day, that time, and those special people are all gone now. They belong to the ages and history of "The Grand Hotel du Niger". When i was back i could almost see myself again, dancing with Tangerine in her flowing gown with Natewick playing next to us and Reeves smiling nearby and nodding his head. The ghosts of these people still walk among the guests and if you look and listen closely and are "lucky" enough to fall in love there they will appear to you i promise. Your stay at this place will be special and i hope you are "lucky" for the wonderful Grand Hotel du Niger and the special people there will be with you for the rest of your life.

Super Hotel
By MicheleR, 4/1/06
This is a superb hotel to relax at after a week in the bush. All the ameneties one expects of a high class hotel. Cocktails on the terrace at sunset is the perfect way to enjoy the views of the piroges coasting along the mighty river below (and gives one an appreciation of why the colonials were such fans of the gin & tonic). The staff is friendly and professional. A 15 minutes walk to the major sights of Niamey. Be aware, you must have a PIN code to use your credit card.

Friendly service and clean rooms. Good BBQ in its excellent veranda restaurant, with spectacular view and sunset. A very welcome surprise in service and cleanliness for this part of the world!
