Locus of Crime

In desperate need of a cheap room -- and not having seen any of the reviews on this page -- I had a friend drive me here. I was pleased to see recent-model cars in the lot and asked to inspect a room before renting. It smelled of smoke and the formica countertops were so cratered from cigarette burns that they looked like they were awaiting Neil Armstrong's landing. The chair and carpet were soiled but the sheets, much to my surprise, were not (at least visibly). There was a doctor's appointment reminder card from 1997 stuck on the mirror.
I decided to return my key and find a room elsewhere. As soon as we pulled out of the lot, our car was pulled over and questioned by a policeman who said that "drugs and prostitution" were the only reasons to visit the "fleabag" motel. He questioned us but after deciding we were not obviously involved in either activity, he let us go. There was another car pulled over immediately outside the lot, so the police apparently make a point of staking out the establishment.
And no wonder. As another reviewer noted, according to the NJ Sex Offender database, eleven of the one hundred rooms at the Sleep E Hollow Motel are currently rented out long-term by sex offenders.
