Lots of problems - avoid this hotel!
I very much wanted to like this hotel, but there were just too many problems. First impression when you walk into the lobby is that it is a magnificent hotel that has been very well restored. Unfortunately things went downhill very badly from there.
The first problem was that we had booked a queen room but they only had a room with two double beds available because the hotel was full. We slept there the first night, but we weren't comfortable in the small bed. I checked their website and found that there was a queen and a king room available for the last 3 nights of our 5 night stay. When I asked at reception if we could move, the person told us that those rooms were only actually available for 1 night and that their website reservation system wasn't up to date. When I asked why they didn't have the room that we had booked, they said "maybe two people booked at the same time" or "maybe someone extended their stay" (needless to say, none of these things should ever happen in a properly run hotel!)
I phoned expedia and asked them to sort out the problem, as we had already paid expedia in full. The person I spoke to at expedia called the hotel and got the same story. They said I could pay to upgrade to a suite, which was available. I said I shouldn't have to pay, and that it was up to expedia to sort the problem out as I had paid them and they weren't giving me what I had paid for. She talked to a supervisor who then called the hotel. After being on hold 2 minutes I was told "someone has just checked out, and a queen room is available for the rest of your stay". When we moved rooms later in the day we were told that in fact 2 queen rooms were available.
Unfortunately there were problems with the new room. The first problem was the heating didn't work. We told the hotel and a maintenance guy apparently looked at the heater and fixed it, but it still wasn't working. He said he would give us a portable heater, but this never materialised even when we phoned reception to remind them. The heater's "clean" light was lit up, which I assume just means the filter needs cleaned, but when I talked to the maintenance guy he seemed to have no idea about it.
Also, the main light could not be switched off - it appears that it wasn't actually wired up to the light switch! We had to unscrew the bulb at night.
Oh, and as others have noted the free breakfast isn't great. There is no cereal or fruit and the croissants have a chemical taste. The muffins and scones are okay.
From our experience I can only conclude that the hotel is very poorly managed, and that the staff are taught to deceive customers so they can sell their rooms to other customers.
Next time we will stay in a holiday inn!
