Service was a Shame
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/28/08
Great, grand hotel with horrible service. I've traveled the world and have never been treated like a criminal in a hotel like this. There was a "security deposit" for everything. I had to ask for an iron and was yelled at that they always disappeard, then my account was charged a security deposit fot it. Front desk staff acted like you were bothering them anytime you asked for something. The restaurant was closed for a private party one morning, and we couldn't even get coffee. We were woken up at 8:30 Saturday morning by a garbage truck outside our room window. All this for a premium price, save your money and stay elsewhere. The staff and their attitudes ruin what could be a great hotel.

We go back again & again.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/19/08
First of all, we have been going out to Montauk for quite a few years. We first stayed at the Manor 9 yrs. ago for our anniversary. It was a great stay then, and even better now. We were just there May 9th, and as usual, there was someone to open the majestic front doors for us with a friendly hello. The workers at the front desk could'nt be more friendly and helpful when checking in or if we ever had a question. Our room #134 not only looked like Martha Stewart just finished decorating it, had a back patio with sunset views of Fort Pond Bay to die for. The bed was so comfortable, we had a hard time getting out of it each morning. Each afternoon, we returned to a completely cleaned room, done over by the maid service that always seems to be smiling & accomadating. Our favorite rooms are #133, #134 & #135 which is the only one w/ a fireplace. They all have a great patio to lounge, read, or have a cocktail on and watch the sun go down on the water. The best sunsets, with different colors emulating through the ski every night for pictures and memories that will last a lifetime. There is a couple who live next to the rooms who we met some years back who are two of the nicest people we have ever met. They have since, become two of our dearest friends. We have never had ant problem with any room or service what so ever. The lobby is a thing of beauty, with its bold columns, big warm fireplaces, player piano and neat little gift shop. The restaurant has a great cook and offers a price fix menu that we found extremely good and reasonable. Of course if you want to go out, they have a brand new luxury van, waiting to drive you or pick you up. Our favorite restaurant in town is "Manucci's". A favorite of the locals with a little of everything. The best buffet breakfast on Sundays hands down. But with the immaculate indoor & outdoor pools, Tennis, golf driving hole and all the Montauk Manor have to offer, you may not want to stray. We've stayed at other places in Montauk, but the Manor is the top of the line. Our only regret, is when we have to check out. We already booked for July and can't wait.

Greatest Anniversary EVER!
By ChrisC, 5/19/08
I'm stunned by the person who complained last week here on Yahoo. My husband and I went to the Montauk Manor from Friday- Sunday to celebrate our 9th wedding anniversary and had the greatest weekend. My husband was instructed to check out Room 134. We could only get it for Friday night so we had a different room for the second night. Room 134 is the most spectacular room I've ever seen and has spoiled us for any future hotel rooms! It had an enormous patio with lovely outdoor furniture, an incredible view and complete tranquility. The duplex itself was decorated in a patriotic, Americana theme that was beautiful and did not miss one detail. The bedroom was gorgeous, complete with a dressing room. The staff was gracious, the grounds gorgeous and the continental breakfast fantastic. We cannot wait to return to Montauk Manor and room 134!

Condo Owner's Response
By Hannelore, 5/18/08
The guests arrived on Tuesday afternoon on a Manor special “stay two nights, get the third night free”. This in response to their complaints; 1) The scaffolding is on the East Side of the building, therefore, impossible to see from where the guests were staying. 2) The first day, before the guests checked in, the first floor public hallway on the West Side of the building was being shampooed and a paper runner was put down on the wet rugs. The guests checked in that afternoon. The guests complained about the paper runner and it was removed from the front of their apartment. The rest was removed the following morning. 3) There was some work being done in the apartment two doors down. They work was from 10 AM to 4 PM. On Wednesday and Thursday three patios were being repaved, two, three and four doors down. Our apartment is in between the guest’s apartment and the rest of the patios of concern. 4) The guests started to complain the afternoon of their arrival. The Manager apologized for the inconvenience and offered a beautiful two-bath apartment unit with a balcony on the third floor with the same view. The gentlemen refused to move. Before the Manager left for the day, she called the apartment. The guests did not answer and the Manager left a message stating that if they decided to stay at that apartment they would have to pay for their stay, i.e., pay two nights and get the third night free. Should they decide to move to see the front desk manager in the morning. She sent a complementary bottle of wine with her apologies for any inconveniences. 5. The guest went to see the front desk manager the next morning. He told her that he was not moving and that he would not pay for the stay and refused to look at the other apartment. Other complaints from the guests followed to various other front desk employees with the same results. 5. On Thursday, while I was at the front desk, the Lady came to complain again and while I was there, the Manager arrived at the front desk. The guest again refused to move and went on about the Waldorf Astoria and Monte Carlo and their wonderful service. It was at that time that she claimed that someone had turned up her refrigerator to the highest setting and that her shrimp and salad had frozen. The Manager offered to reimburse her and asked for a receipt. The guest stormed back into her apartment and came back and slammed a bowl onto the front desk … and then, to the amazement of the people assembled at the front desk, with her right hand in the bowl proceeded to throw lettuce and a few shrimp onto the front desk. A picture of the incident exists. Immediately thereafter the couple decided not to take advantage of the “get third night free” and left around 3PM. The Manor is dedicated to make the stay of their guests as pleasant as possible. The Manor is a Condo with 140 individually owned apartments ranging from studio to 3 bedrooms. It has become a favorite destination for many visitors from the USA to around the world. Most guests cannot wait to come back and sometimes make reservations a year in advance.

Caveat Emptor - A terrible experience
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/16/08
Rude Service by entire staff and condo owner: Arriving on a beautiful day to celebrate our anniversary, we were greeted with construction crews all over the property beginning with three story scaffolding which made what was supposed to be a picturesque frontage unsightly. After checking in for our honeymoon suite, we were again greeted by unsightly paper runners covering the just cleaned carpet. That paper would remain in the entire hallway until the next day and had to be requested for it's removal for safety sake. Then the shock of opening the doors to the terrace overlooking the bay to find a crew of a dozen men and their vehicles grinding tiles for the next three days from 9am-4pm a never ending pitch which did not allow any romantic enjoyment of breakfast or cocktails on the terrace or any morning peace and quiet. When making the initial reservations, the staff highly recommended this room as the honeymoon suite and it was described as the only one with romantic bay view, fireplace, duplex, and terrace. Never once did anyone truthfully disclose what this was going to happen. Nor did they say that the restaurant would be closed during our stay. The Manager was not to arrive for two days. The manager's response was that they did not have to disclose this information and further claimed that all hotels have this non-disclosure policy (BAIT & SWITCH) Further embarrassment with her yelling in the lobby what she felt was justified. She offered another room but we were not interested in a downgrade. They sent a bottle of wine with a card for our inconvenience. Had we been truthfully told so much construction would occur we would never had scheduled our trip here. The duplex's refrigerator setting was on 'high' so the groceries we purchased for afternoon cocktails were all destroyed with freezer burn. All she did was apologize and ask for a receipt. We did not have the receipt and showed her the destroyed food and again she did nothing. There were many other service and amenity problems. With my four generations in the hotel business, I have never experienced such poor and insulting customer service. When asked who I could escalate notification of all that had happened, I was given a business card with a PO Box and told to write to the board and furthermore they did not have to provide any names for contact information. Having been insulted enough, we aborted our stay at the Manor. We will not return and warn that even if you inquire beforehand, the representatives of the property collectively displayed no integrity, unsatisfactory customer services and lack of grace in this entire situation. Caveat emptor.

Best of the Best
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/5/08
I love Montauk Manor. I literally vacationed there with my family when I was younger every year for around 12 years. I finally went back recently when I was older and got to experience it all with more grown up eyes. The service is friendly & reliable. You are in a great location that is close to both the center of town and beach (I used to run to the beach from the hotel, if you're ambitious) and just a short drive from Goshman's Dock (if it's still there, I heard it was being replaced by condos!??!?). The clientle isn't too much to handle -- it has vacationers, but there is an overall very reasonable, laid back, not too Manhattanite feel. I hope to bring my kids there when I have them!!

Room 136!!!
By Joe, 3/28/08
A prior reviewer mentioned that the first floor rooms with patios are the best. He was right. Our beautifully decorated room had a vintage fireplace, a two story living room, an amazingly compact, but fully equipped kitchen, an enormous terrace overlooking Fort Pond, and a loft style bedroom with ample storage. Cons: the bed and bedding were a bit worn, and the otherwise imacculate bathroom is a bit dated and short on counter space. That said, we still return every year in April for my birthday weekend. People have commented on the rudeness of staff. This is not my experience at all - they were very accomodating and warm to me and my partner, but then, we have been there for the past 4 years were polite to them as well and tipped the maid generously. The restaurant was reasonably priced and the food quite good. I would recommend side trips to East Hampton, Southampton and Amagansett for other dining experiences and museum visits.

vacation
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/14/07
What i liked about the pl;ace was the people were friendly and talked to us.Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. The service at the gift store was nice and the living room was very comfortable. I didn't like the Submarine like bedroom doors. I was a little dissapointed. I was impressed with the size of the manor and its history. I liked Montauk overall, and the lighhouse was very interesting to see. i went to the top with my parents and sister. The weathure was nice even though my grandfather had just passed away. I miss him, and by going to Montauk it took my mind off of it. Season's Greetings P.S. My mom bought the Montauk book history of Montauk. From Adriana Jawdoszyn

Don't Judge This Book by its Cover
By JenniferM, 9/10/07
Don't be fooled by the grand exterior of the Montauk Manor. While the grounds might be lovely and the manor itself old world elegance, once you enter the lobby, you're on your own. Booked three days off season with my husband, mother and six month old son just after Labor Day and were treated with nothing but disdain and disinterest the entire trip. Apparently off-season guests are not worth the effort after a long busy summer. The one restaurant that they claim to "offer" as part of your stay was CLOSED the entire time we were there leaving some guests (including us with a small child)sometimes stranded with no food and barely a vending machine. Any normal hotel gift shop, as far as we could see, did not actually exist and the spa that they claim is part of the Montauk Manor is in fact not part of the Manor at all. It was truly amazing how many times the front desk would attempt to avoid any accountability with comments like "the spa is not really a part of the hotel" or "we are not responsible for the restaurant's schedule". Other wild misrepresentations are that these are actually hotel rooms. They are not. These are all co-op units, owned by other people with squeaky beds, sorely outdated bathrooms and slapped together kitchens. Once again, this is not a full service hotel! Do not be fooled by the crafty web site and DO NOT WASTE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY!!!!!

Know before you go
By benny9955, 9/7/07
We went to the manor for a couple of day getaway. I was ill the 1st day of my planned trip so i called the hotel to see if I could postpone my stay 1 day. They were not accomadating in changing the date. I also called to see that they had room service so I wouldn't have to go out for dinner as I was not feeling well. I was told they did. When I called for room service I was told the restuarant was closed. It was closed our entire stay. The room we had was clean but the ceramic tile that was in the bathroom was also in the living area and kitchen. No carpeting except for the bedroom. No bellhop service,no restuarant or room service, the giftshop was also closed the entire stay. Expect nothing and you will be happy.
