Nice facility, not best service, not good for singles
The Rembrandt is certainly a nicely appointed hotel and the rooms are clean and comfortable. Location is good too. I was traveling alone and my biggest complaints with the hotel were that they charged extra for everything, which may be suitable for business travelers but is a drag for vacationers. Even connecting to an 800 number in U.S. cost me 100 baht and they wanted 280 baht to use a computer to check my email. Instead I went next door to a caf and did the same thing for 20 baht. Laundry would have been 1200 baht for a load that cost 200 baht across the street. My room was beautiful, but had a smell of urine oddly and when I reported this, they looked confused and sent housekeeping up with a powder cleaner that did not really work. My worst experience however was with the night staff. Bangkok is known for its sex trade, so the hotels try to remain respectable by setting up rules about guests in rooms. But this hotel went too far. My nephew picked me up at the airport and dropped me off at the hotel (he lives in BKK) and so I invited him up to see the room while standing at the check-in counter. The staff immediately reacted and shoved a form in front of us stating that I would be charged 1400 baht (about $45) for him to come up for 5 minutes! He talked to them in Thai and they relented, but later in the week, when I brought back a friend I had met during my stay, the same thing happened and they charged me to bring her up. I checked out the next day and complained to a manager, who then informed me that if my guest had registered with the hotel, the extra charge would not be necessary. Unfortunately this sudden change in policy was not explained earlier. If it had been explained, then I would have registered my friend for the room and all would be OK. The hotel charges a fee for something that costs them nothing. I do not believe the single/dual occupancy charges are different for a room with a king or double beds. In any case, I felt like I was being treated as a criminal and in their efforts to keep prostitutes out of the hotel, they cast too wide a dragnet one which, by the way, does not work anyway, since I saw plenty of couples of tourists and Thai women that were questionable. I think they need to let it go rather than making every person who walks through the door with a guest like a john. When the manager asked if there was anything he could do for me, I requested that he remove the 1400 baht charge. He took the bill back and made a call, returning 5 minutes later to say that no, he could not remove the charge. I left.
