Falling Standards
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/12/07
We have stayed at Hostellerie Berard 4 times in the past. Previously we would have no hesitation in recommending either the hotel or the restaurant. Unfortunately our last trip in April 2007 was a severe disappointment and we can no longer recommend it.
A number of issues arose for us. Firstly was the building work which up until last week (22 April) was still going on even though the hotel website stated that the facilities would be open in february 2007. This led to noise, dust and the garage being used as a workshop. Every time we needed to use the garage it involved a shuffle of various builders vehicles (as many as 8 at a time). Anyone who has used the garage and is aware of the narrow entrance will understands what this means. As the garage was used for the cutting of tiles, wood etc. the car needs a valet.
The second and perhaps bigger disappointment was the restaurant. In our accommodation we had paid for table d'hote each night. We found a very repititious menu, poor quality food on a number of occasions and the restaurant closed on Monday nights despite it supposed to being open. There was a noticeable lack of customers and in our six night stay I would say only 2 of the meals got anywhere near previous standards.
Despite previous enjoyable visits they seem to have lost the plot and I would be reluctant to go back there.
