Mainstay: Stay Away
Though the hotel looks nice in the brochure, it is misleading. My girlfriend and I chose the Mainstay for our trip to Burlington, VT for the Burlington Marathon over Memorial Day Weekend.
We had difficulty finding it because it is not well marked. In fact, there is no sign at all; it is hidden from the main road by another hotel.
The brochure boasts "Premium Channels" on the brochure. We arrived and quickly discovered that this was deceptive wording. When paying $160 per night for a hotel room, I expect them to have HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, the full package. The woman at the desk argued with me when I called down to complain that "premium channels means ABC, CBS, NBC..." I interupted her and informed her that those are stations that everyone gets. You do not even need cable to get those channels. She then came back with another ridiculous explanation that 30 channels constitutes basic cable. Anything above 31 "is considered premium channels." Considered by who?
We stayed in the hotel for 2 nights, and found many problems with the room to our great disliking. The air-conditioning was broken, and was not fixed until the second day of our stay. They told us to "open your window for air." I would have done so gladly, but our window opened to a steaming manhole. The Mainstay boasted ethernet access to the internet; this did not work. There were many other problems: the lamp on my bedside was broken, the remote control did not work, the fan in the bathroom did not work, wallpaper in the bathroom was peeling, etc.
Though the Mainstay does not have a pool of their own, they share the one at the Howard Johnsons in the adjoining parking lot. I guess that's better than nothing. The room did have a functional kitchen which was nice.
We let them know that we were uncomfortable and extremely dissatisfied, and to their credit, they were willing to try to do right by us. They comped our first night stay and offered us a gift certificate to come back sometime. Who knows if we will ever use it.
