A good choice for many reasons!

We decided to try a different hotel at Disney. Usually we stay at the Contemporary (Love that Monorail!). We were pleasantly surprised. We went in April of 2004. The hotel was just finishing a full renovation and everything was up and running. They were still painting the railings on our building. The workers were pleasant and as quiet as possible. It is a smaller resort then the Riverside, and we liked it that way. The Sassagoola (?) Float Works had fairly good food (for Disney). It is like a cafeteria. There is no real restaurant at Port Orleans, you must go to another resort or Downtown Disney for that. (Oh! You must try the beignets!!! Oh my!) Port Orleans has a small shop, an outdoor bar, and a pool with a King Triton(?)and Sea Monster waterslide. Some of the walkways are like cobblestones and most rooms are fairly close to the boat launches. We liked the Mardi Gras feeling of the resort. The music keeps you going! The rooms are fairly small but well appointed with a southern, old fashioned feeling. (They were cute.) One thing it would be good for Disney to do (My Disney wish!) would be to put those 'day beds' that they have at the Contemporary in their other resort rooms. You know...the ones that are couches that flip over into a bed? My children thought it was the coolest thing when they saw it for the first time years ago! (Having older children who WILL NOT sleep together in one bed makes it difficult for small families to have enough room choices that are not more expensive or having to get two connecting rooms! I am sure that allowing one child to sleep on the floor has ended many a fight in Disney World!) You can walk up to the Riverside resort by asphalt (or was it concrete?) path, but with all the walking we did every day we didn't want to. You can take a really nice boat ride to Downtown Disney (great access!). It takes about 15 to 20 minutes. It is slow, but a refreshing rest. The 'captain' jokes around with the guests and explains different parts of the river and Disney property to the group as you ride. Once in a while the waits for the boats would be a bit long, but then you got to meet other guests while waiting in line, right? ;-) Usually the boats came every 15 to 20 minutes (I think). I could stay by the pool, and my husband could take a boat to Downtown Disney. Then he would call me on the cellphone and we would arrange to meet somewhere. He was never bored! All-in-all, we really liked this resort.
