It is a comforting place to stay

I was warned about lack of modern amenities -no phone, no television, bathroom in the hall- when i made reservations. The hotel is functional and charming and lively and very nicely decorated for the holidays. Staff is courteous and helpful. The water is hot; the sheets are clean. Charly's food is superior.
I am 83 years old and climbed the flights of stairs to my room on the 3rd floor and fell asleep with people laughing, drinking and eating in the hotel and the trains running nearby. And the Zane Grey room was just down the hall. Much better than a quiet, dull motel with no history!
