Best little hole in the wall in Manila
I absolutely LOVED my stay at this hotel.
The staff is exceptionally friendly, everyone in the Hotel new my name and made it a point to go above and beyond. Quite frankly the hotel could use some TLC on the outside, but the inside was immaculate. Every bit of brass, glass and marble was polished to a bright luster, you could see yourself. Although quarters can be rather tight, it felt like home is a bizaar sort of way. It was nice to get back to the Hotel after an excursion. The food was excellent, they made it a point to always have what they consider a "western style" breakfast in addition to the Filipeno dishes available. Granted, the Filipeno idea of breakfast sausage is something other than what a southern gentleman would expect, but it's good in its own right. The roof top heli-pad (rarely used as far as i can tell, i never saw one), is situated half over the lounge and pool area. the rooftop lounge was very relaxing, at the top of 31 stories it just happens to be at the same height the fireworks explode. I spent many pleasent evenings,(and a few lunches to boot), sipping cocktails in the breeze above the fumes of manila looking out from there. The barkeeps are Excellent, as are their non alcoholic coctails! (try the Mango Shake!) Be sure to be personable with the staff.
I rate the service as 5 stars because it truley was. The hotel had guarded parking for my rental car, to my surprise i made friends of the staff i will not ever forget.
The Location can be a problem if you are bringing your family. It is situated in an area that has some "girley bars" within a couple of blocks of it, and Mr. "Sir, Sir, nice wallets, very fine belts, Sir" turns into Mr. "Sir, Sir, Viagra, Cialis, Sir" at night... Security is not a problem at all during the day. The Hotel is situated next door to a row of banks, and as such there is a detail (8 to 15) of men with shotguns and automatic weapons on duty out in the street during the daytime. (all banks have that there, get used to it) At night an adult male is in no danger, but i wouldnt walk alone during the night if you are a female of small stature or infirm. I dont think you would be in personal danger, but you could return with fewer items than you left with and probably wouldnt even realise it
The Cleanliness was very good, the only reason i dont give it 5 stars was an unfortunate issue one morning at the breakfast buffet, i noticed a small insect who had found paradise in the promised land of a plate of sweet meats. I quietly pointed it out to a waiter, and from the face he made you would have thought it was a crocodile sitting on the table hissing at him. He whisked the plate away and no meat of that kind was served again for the remainder of my visit, saving me from even having to ask myself that question, which i thought was insightful and prudent of them.
Value. The Value. The trade off for the location is the Value. I think i payed around 85 american dollars a night during my stay. The brass, the marble, the heavy glass, the food preparation. In America i would have payed 250 a night for that. Easy.
Wireless internet is available in per hour or per day purchase, i think the days access was 600p or about 15 dollars at todays exchange rate. If you just need to check email or what have you, you can goto a internet cafe around the corner for about 25p per hour, just be aware you could be sending a virus with that email. The public computers there tend to be rather virulent.
