One word of advise

Find somewhere else on the island, tons of places do your homework before you book.

Not the vacation spot
By ,
not the place to go is you want to relax and be catered on. The staff yes you to death but never come up with a solution for the problem and blame everyone else. you can get so much more bang for your $ at other locations on the island. our vacation was a nightmare. not the place to hold any type of event as everyone is on a differant page with no communications among themselves.

Nice place but...
By ,
I attended a wedding there this past May. It was a very nice resort and when they mean all inclusive they really mean it. The selection of restaurants at the resort is great. It's right on the beach, and you really don't have to leave the resort. I think we left once for snorkling. With that said, out of the 30 people that went on the wedding party almost half had their credit card info stolen. Some of which only had used the card on file to book the room and didn't use it again the entire trip. We used our debit card to reserve the room and a couple of weeks later we found it our card was being used to purchase gas in Texas! We live outside of Chicago so I know it wasn't me. After doing some more digging, we found out that this has happened before at the resort. So be careful! I'm rating this average since the resort downplayed the credit card info being stolen, and not really helping in correcting the issue. If this hadn't happened I would have given it another star.

An OK stay but will not return...
By ,
Well to start off, we arrived at the Melia Caribe Tropical around 3:00pm just in time for check-in. We had no problem getting a room but quickly found that little to none of the staff spoke English. As soon as we received our complimentary towel cards and our room keys we were quickly approached by a man that seemed he was native to this country. His name was Woody and was telling us how he would "treat us like VIPS" and repeatedly called us "his family." He explained how our trip would work and where to eat, have a drink, and do activities. So then we were golf carted back to our room to find that our bags were dropped off and we could then settle and get ready for our first meal at the Melia. We had no reservation naturally and had to eat at the buffet. We took a train to the Tropical lobby at about 5:30pm and ate our dinner. The trains that ran there were convienient and we found that if you ask nicely and give a few bucks you can get picked up by a golf cart. When we got home that evening my brother and I found that we did not feel well. That night and morning we were sick. We tried to remember what we ate and received the thought that it was indeed the salads. They are washed in their water and made us very sick. We bought a bottle of Pepto for 8 bucks and chugged it down and slowly felt better. Reservations were easy but tough. Every time someone answered the phone they rambled on in Spanish and we had no clue what they were saying. The beach was beautiful and so was the pool areas. On Sunday (the next day we were there,) Woody, our concierge, took us to a meeting for a timeshare. We did not want to stay for the 90 minute meeting and were NOT interested in buying a timeshare. Woody then snubbed us and did not take care of "his family" anymore. The food was not the best and aside from just not feeling up to eating, my family and I were not pleased. All in all, I would say go but just be catious of what you eat.

Do Not Book
By ,
Before I begin to detail our experience at the Melia Caribe Tropical in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic let me first explain that this was the honeymoon my husband and I never had the opportunity to go on. This trip was ten years in the making and something we had worked, saved and planned for. To say the trip was a disappointment would be a gross understatement. Our initial welcoming into the hotel was non existent, we got off the hotel shuttle as we watched our bags thrown on the sidewalk. After waiting several minutes for some kind of greeting, direction, explanation, and several attempts to speak to the bellhops we were pointed in the direction of the front desk and told to leave our belongings out front. We approached the front desk which had no line just masses of people bunched around the counter. When we finally were able to get someone to respond to us we were told that our room was not ready and we would have to wait another 30 minutes. Check in time was 3:00, we were told this at approximately 3:15. We waited the 30 minutes and returned to a similar scene at the front desk. The woman working the desk completely ignored us for about 10 minutes before finally telling us she would check our room. We stood there for another 30-40 minutes while she repeatedly took other customers without ever checking on our room. At one point she took the information booklet she had given us earlier containing our towel passes and with our room number written on it and crossed out the room number and gave it to another customer in line. We finally were given a room after approximately an hour and a half, and more than a full hour after check in time. Although I understand things happen and rooms are not always ready on time, it was the complete lack of concern, apology, or even common courtesy that was very upsetting. The front desk acted as if we should be grateful we got a room at all. Our next incident occurred when we went to retrieve our bags from out front, which were still sprawled on the sidewalk where they had been thrown. Obviously eager to finally get to the room, we asked the bellhop to please take them to our room. We were told they would be there in 2 hours! Not willing to wait that long, my husband had to carry them the considerable distance to our room since, we were told by several passing workers in golf carts that they could not give us a ride.We had hoped that this would be an end to the problems on our much-anticipated trip. It was not. The same unsatisfactory and many times down right rude customer service that greeted us on our arrival continued through out the trip. Dinner reservations were messed up, we were told we had none, until we physically had to point to our name on the list and show the “host” where it was. Countless times we were out right ignored while trying to take advantage of the “all inclusive” services. Simple requests like “May I have two beers?” were answered with stares if at all. Our room, which we had been so desperate to get into, was located directly above a room being renovated. Drills and saws are not part of what I consider a relaxing vacation. When we asked to be moved because of the disruption, we were told no. As a matter of fact the only thing the staff did seem ready to respond to any request was NO! The one thing we did enjoy about this trip, a snorkeling tour, not affiliated with the Meliá Caribe Tropical, was even ruined by the hotel. We ordered a DVD of the experience to share with our family. The DVD was delivered to the hotel, which lost it. Again, we were met with the same poor attitude that was the norm on this trip, “Oh well, it is not here, there is nothing we can do”. I can not in good conscience let anyone else spend their hard earned money and wasted their all too precious time with loved ones experiencing the things my husband and I dealt with while at the Meliá Caribe Tropical.

Would love to go back!
By ,
Hotel, grounds, beaches and pools were beautiful. The food at the buffets was incredible as was the food at the resturants we ate in with the exception of the American Grill. We never had any problems making dinner reservations. The staff everywhere was very attentive and we never had to ask twice for anything. Our room was nice enough. It was clean and air conditioned, we were only there to sleep anyway. Two complaints: 1) we frequently had to ask for face towels but a call to the front desk had the towels there in 10 minutes. 2) there were times when we had to flush the toilet more than once to remove all the toilet paper from the bowl. The one real complaint I have was the sales people trying to get you to view their timeshare vacation club villas. On the third day I told the person that I wasn't interested, after that, I was left alone. When all is said and done, I'd return there in a skinny minute.

liked it but wouldn't go back
By ,
we went for a wedding and there was 12 of us,the wedding was awsome but we had to wait 2 hours before going to have dinner which was great but they put us in a small small room without any music or windows. thank god we could keep ourselves entertained. the drinks were great but 5 out of 12 of us were sick from the food. i think i actually lost weight going there. the place was way to big that we spent most of our time waiting for a train or walking a 100 miles. another thing i didn't like is you could never see the ocean. not from your room, not from the resteraunts nowhere unless you walked there. i like to be able to see the ocean when your at a resort. the water was ok. none of us realy spent to much time at the beach, we all loved the pool and the swim up bar. the night life was ok. we like to snorkel there and you realy can't,there are boats and it's too choppy and wide open so there's no fish. i like to adventure out when i go away and you realy don't want to leave the resort.
