Definitely coming back :)
I & 4 friends stayed at Melia for the 2nd week in July 2012. It was amazing! Every staff member was helpful & kind. I have to give proper recognition to everyone who was amazing: Bartenders at the swim up bar- Dionicio Lara, Jose Diaz, & Ramon, Restaurant staff- Robert Gomez Rosario, Welinson Pacheco, Carlos, Radhames, Golf cart driver- Juan D, Housekeeper- Altagracia Sanobia. Leandro from VIP tours located in the Tropical lobby was very helpful & kind. Really & truly, everyone went out of their way to guarantee a great stay. We tipped very well & as often as possible.
My room was located near the Turey restaurant, train stop, pool, & beach. I loved it! Yes, making reservations were nearly impossible, but thanks to the friends we made from the staff, we were able to get reservations every night even if we were originally told they were booked. :)
We went on 2 excursions: 1) Bavaro runners to the sugarcane plantation, cigar hut, horseback riding, Dominican restaurant in the hills, Maria's coffee/hot cocoa house, & boogie boarding on Macao Beach, 2) Subquatics to the middle of the ocean for snorkeling & swimming with the sharks/ sting rays. Our tour guides: Sammy from Bavaro Runners and Danny from Subquatics were informative, funny, & helpful.
We also did kayaking in the non-motorized water sports area, sipped out of fresh coconuts outside of Los Cocos restaurant, & exercised in the fitness center. The trolley that gets you around the facility was a bit slow at times, so a few times we either hailed down a golf cart or walked it, which wasn't so bad.
We went to the club Imagine two nights in a row. The music there is great & it's beautifully built in a cave. However, on the second night I was crapped on by a hanging bat TWICE. Also, it is not important to wear heels ladies due to the uneven floor of the cave. Most importantly, make sure you purchase the $40 voucher for roundtrip taxi, door cover charge, & 2 drinks because the club doesn't let you in without it. The first night we just got a cab for $15 & decided to pay at the door since we figured we could just drink at the hotel and didn't need drinks, but we were halted & denied access. After much pleading & explaining & plain old refusing to turn around & go home, the voucher guy let us give him $20 each let us in! lol We bought the voucher the 2nd night, though! lol
All in all, we had a blast. The staff was incredible & I already miss all of their smiling faces. The food was so-so at best. The alcoholic drinks were good once you got to know the bartender & what alcohol offers the most kick (Ron Hispaniola 151, Ron Dorado, Brugal in the black bottle, & drinks like the Santo Libre (sprite/rum), mama juana, & even the cocoloco w/tons of added rum extra viejo).
Have fun folks!
