Pet Urine Odor & Disgusting Pillows
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/15/08
My experience was quite different from the others. My father, daughter, and I checked in on Friday night for two rooms for two nights. My room was 101. Walking down the corridor, my little girl ran ahead of me happy as can be but then said "It smells like pee!" She was right! The odor was strong and disgusting. My father called the front desk and was told that they were trying to address the problem but that a couple have been staying there for 5 months with their 3 cats and the litter box is next to the door. Oh my. My room seemed fine at first. But when I got into bed, I noticed a strong odor. I thought is was the pillows. I looked inside the pillow cases and saw lots of sweat and blood stains on both pillows. Gross! I called the front desk and they asked me to bring them to the desk for replacement. So my young daughter and I changed out of our pjs and went to the front desk. The attendant glanced inside the pillow case and said that was normal for their hotel. Unbelievable. My daughter and I returned to our room. Once again, I got in bed and noticed that strong odor again. I sniffed around a little and realized that I was smelling pet urine on the floor next to the night stand. I called the front desk. The attendant said she was surprised since no one has stayed in that room in quite some time. I asked her to please come down and smell for herself. Her reply: "No, I'm pregnant and I'll probably throw up if I smell that." I asked for another room. She said the only available room on that floor was next to the couple with the three cats, so I passed on that. She then found me another room on the second floor and she asked me to return again to the front desk so she could issue me more room keys. We got changed again and packed up our things. At that front desk, the attendant said she looked closer at the pillows and agreed there was a problem. She suggested that I contact the manager on Sunday. I considered doing that, but honestly the problem is so disgustingly obvious and the management is clearly ignoring the problem. I think a better use of my time is to warn others. My room on the second floor was fine. However, my father kept his room on the first floor. He had a large barking door across the hall. There was a lot of dog hair on the carpet. The management seems to be trying to cover up the smell in the hall with some chemical product like Lysol. But at 3:30am, it stopped working. My dad woke up to the stench of pet urine and feces coming from under the door. Gross! The pool was fine, but on the small side. The hotel is a bit tricky to find. The breakfast was fine and was similar to other extended stay hotels. All in all, we really should have gone to the nearby Residence Inn.

Customer Service Delivered
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/14/07
The very concept has become so abused and diluted. Those companies making an effort to improve upon it have been touting their attention to customer service as a benefit of dealing with them as compared to a competitor. Whatever happened? At a recent stay at a MainStay Suites hotel in upstate South Carolina, I was reminded of what customer service is all about. This is an award-winning hotel, one of the top locations in their chain. This particluar hotel is operated by Angie Palomino, a local entreprenaur. Regardless, Choice Hotels does drive policy and procedure standards for all of their operations, but Angie does far more than simply adhere to minimum standards. She views customer service as her sole product. This particular location is located close to such outstanding corporations as Michelin, Timken and BMW. They often will have groups of visiting employees as guests for weeks at a time. Angie understands the unique expectations of her guests, especially foreign ones, designing details of their stay to offer them the most comfort and relaxing experience. She does a great job, earning her the highest awards in her company and industry. She is proud of her record and ever mindful of improving upon it. The evening manager, Michelle, is a wonderful example of a customer service oriented employee. When I arrived, She greeted me by name, even though I am there no more than once per month. At first, I thought I was extra special, but soon noticed that she knew the names of all of the frequent and semi-frequent guests. She sponsors a managers reception each evening for guests to mingle and enjoy refreshments and snacks. She makes it a point to visit with everyone and learn something about them and their reason for staying. That evening after dinner, I arrived back at the hotel a bit later than usual. The reception was winding up as I headed to my room. A few minutes later, the phone rang and Michelle was asking if I had a chance to get my Cherios? She was about to close up the kitchen and lock the door. You see, she knows that I like to snack on a couple of mini boxes of Cherios later in the evening with my de-caf coffee. She always allows me to go into the kitchen to get my cereal even though there is a sign on the door stating "employees only." She also knows that I prefer interior rooms on the first floor, and always manages to have one for me. Once, after four weeks of not being her guest, Michelle called me at my office to make me aware of an upcoming convention that was rapidly consuming their rooms for the next week. She didn't want me to call for a reservation and find that there was no room at the inn if my business would bring me there that week. How considerate! Why would I ever stay anywhere else? I wouldn't. Angie runs a first class hotel operation and has top employees like Michelle to make customer experiences as pleasant as possible. Staying there is like visiting a friend and who doesn't like to do business with their friends? Active and vibrant customer service is certainly alive and well at the MainStay Suites hotel in Greenville, SC. What a suite hotel should be
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/16/05
Mainstay Suites in Greenville has the service, value and comfort that every suite hotel should aspire to. First, the staff goes out of their way to make your stay as pleasant as possible. They recognize my pre-teen daughter and I when we come in for our regular stay and make us feel like we are coming home for a visit. Second, Mainstay is a great value. The continental breakfast buffet has ample choices, and the rooms are well-stocked with everything we need to prepare a meal without having to spend money on a restaurant. The reasonable rates allow us to get a room that is large enough for us to spread out. Most important, Mainstay provides a comfortable setting for my daughter and I to spend quality time together. The pool, patio, and dining area are well-kept; the extra touches such as wide variety of board games and a gas grill for common use just add to the feeling of home. Although the pool is not enclosed or heated and a hot breakfast option would be nice, Mainstay makes our weekend stays in Greenville a great experience for our travel dollar.
