would never go back
By ,
our room had a mold mildew problem. we got another room, same problem. the air did not work, the water smelled when you took a shower the towels even smelled from the water. the staff were friendly and helpful. food was just ok. drinks were of poor quality and brands. for what you pay it is not worth the value.sorry just being honest. would not recommend this hotel. try an upgrade to the palace, better quality and value. i would give the hotel a two star rating, but your program will only let me give a three. we had a good time once we left the room.

An amazing time!
By ,
My husband and I took a trip in June of 2002 with 2 other couples and had a FANTASTIC time. The staff went out of their way to make sure that our stay was comfortable. Everyone was very friendly. We loved the location on the beach. The food and food choices were excellent. And the drinks kept coming! :-)Great swim up bar!

Is RIU Playacar run by Motel 6?
By ,
This hotel is not worth staying at. Upon our arrival, our door keys did not work and it took the staff forever to fix them. When they did fix the locks, the door knob fell off. Just the fact they have metal keys is pathetic, considering that even cheap motor lodges in the states have key cards. There were only 2 ala carte restaurants, seafood, which was good, and steak, in which my steak was full of gristle. There was also a buffet restaurant which had fairly good food, except the steak again had lots of gristle and fat in it. The hotel property is small, and regardless of what travel agents tell you, you DO NOT have access to the restaurants on the other RIU properties. The pool area was pathertic as well, as there was no poolside entertainment and a very tiny pool bar where you could never get a seat. The beach was nice, but watch our for those nasty black crow-like birds that fly around there. One swooped down at my head and scratched my head with its talons, which did not feel very good considering my scalp was sunburned. I will never stay at this hotel again and I strongly recommend to anyone reading this to stay somewhere else if you are traveling to Playa del Carman.

Great staff, fun and exciting nightly shows. Everything you need is there at the resort for fun and entertainment. Great food, shopping, crafts, and just relaxation. Great place to bring the kids or just a place to be alone. Everything you would expect and more.

No refunds for scuba diving if you can't go!
My friends and I stayed at the Riu Playacar in July 2012. The hotel is actually 3 star not 5 star. But, the pool, beach and food are great. The staff and guests are very nice also. I especially liked that there were palm trees on the beach instead of beach umbrellas. The hotel's alcaholic drinks are not watered-down like the disco's in town. The air conditioning in the room is not so great. The chamber maids are cheap with the soap. They want you to use your old soap from previous days. Its not fun to go out and beg them for more soap. The thing to look out for is that the scuba diving company wants to be fully pre-paid in advance, before they train you for it. They will not give a refund if you can not actually go on the scuba diving trip for medical reasons, or if you don't like the starter class. They do their best to avoid a refund. They are not like American companies that give refunds to maintain customer satisfaction. Before the scuba diving is paid for, they are so nice and friendly. But, if you want a legitimite refund, suddenly, they become all about the money and not so friendly. So, as far as the scuba diving is concerned in this hotel, its "Buyer beware!"

Was nice for first trip to Mexico
By ,
First trip to Mexico. Beds are hard but you can ask the front desk for a matress pad. This made a world of difference. The help is very friendly. Bartenders were friendly and funny. Short walk to the beach. We walked the beach to Yukatan and across the street to Tequilia. Both are nicer but Tequila is not on the beach. The pool bar was nice but again Yukatan was better and they had 3 bars compared to only one at Playacar. Lobby bar was very small also. People all seemed to enjoy themselves. Overall for my first trip down it was an OK place to stay. Not fancy but nice. We made reservations for the steak meal. It was OK. Steak better back in U.S. Also did the reservations for Mexican. Very good overall trip. Great beach!

Play iwth Iguanas and parrotts at RIU Playacar
By ,
The srevice was first class, being greeted with a tropical drink at check in was great! The room was very comfortable and extremely clean and well maintained. I loved the little attention to detail by the daily staff. To have someone ask you at the pool if there was anything that I needed was also very good ! The locations was excellent also. 40 minute walks to Playa del Carmen was just right, no one can lay around for days on end and feel good, walking was great. Overall expereince was 5 star ! I do wish that locally employed staff would have more knowledge of the English language. Other than that, the service, the entertainment, the presentation of the hotel and the food was really well done and prepared. Thank you. I had a great vacation and have super pictures and wonderful memory. Melitta Holcombe, Greenville, SC 29615, USA
