Great Holiday Stay!

We stayed at this hotel over the Christmas holiday. The service was excellent, staff very friendly, room very clean and comfortable. Will stay here again when in the area.

Awesome waterfront location

Great view from our room on the 14th floor. Well-appointed hotel with clean, comfortable accommodations. Fitness Center and pool were decent. Public areas are very nice

Sadly, this hotel did not meet expectations.
By Fran, 7/8/09
I travel often and choose Marriott hotels whenever I can as I usually receive very good service and top drawer accommodations. It was very disappointing to find this hotel lacking in so many respects. I was unable to connect to the internet in my room and when I asked for assistance, I was given a toll free number to call that immediately put me on hold for 10+ minutes (after which I just hung up). Service in the restaurant was VERY slow and it appeared not to have sufficient staff for the number of patrons even at 1/3 capacity. Finally, as a single traveler, I enjoy relaxing and watching television in the evenings but only had the minimum of channels available of which 5 were sports channels. When I asked about this, I was told that with the new changes to all digital, the system was in transition so there would be fewer channels available until the transition was completed. It was unknown how long the transition would take and if it would be completed within my four day stay. This was particularly frustrating as the switchover from digital had taken place weeks before and not without warning. The lobby and the view are lovely but after such a mediocre stay those things seemed more like a facade than a real indication of the quality of the hotel. I would not stay here again.

AVOID BY ALL MEANS
By mulualema, 4/25/09
If you are planning on having an event at this hotel, by all means AVOID it. The so called "event planners" are pretty much out there to rip all the money you have by adding charges that you didn't even know about. I had to call these people for their own business to set up my event and its always the same answer i got "oooo i was about to call you". even at the day of my event, from the moment i went to the reception to check in i was forced to wait 2 hours in the lobby even though i specifically stated it when i reserved the room that i was going to check in early, and did i mention that i called twice to confirm it. If you think that you can talk to a manager to fix your problems, forget it. they are all clicks that are out there to rip your money and respect. Unless you want pay their HIGH price and be treated like trash, eat a week old nasty food, and have no problem being lied to, you do not want to go there.

NOT WORTH THE MONEY BUT GREAT VIEW
By LOLETA, 7/14/08
I was really excited to stay at this hotel and when me and my husband got there I was surprised. It is very nice when you walk in. Parking is 10 dollars a day in the parking garage so that was the first problem for me. Then customer service was so slow upon check in. Got to the room and I was like WTF.... Tub was dirty, no microwave or fridge so don't look for one. You have to request it. It was so hot in the room I could barely take it. There was nothing special at all about this room. I SWEAR!!! I stayed at better looking Holiday Inn Express for less. Wanted to go swimming but it was very cold. It was also green and the appreance of the area was very dirty. This is all true.. Kids running around unsupervised. We asked if the heater could be turned on but we were told it was broken. Before I leave in the morning I always make the bed up like it was when I came in so I did the same this day. I expected that the sheets would be changed but no no... the same sheets as the day before only new hand towels. From the first day there was never any garbage bags in any of the cans. Asked for them and still had nothing. Don't get me wrong it was a nice location, beautiful view and the bottom half of the hotel was very nice but PLEASE don't let that fool you into thinking that your getting a wonderful room to stay in because your not. I promise I wouldn't lie to you. The rooms are not what they seem online and I would hate for you to be disappointed. Don't waste your money... You would be happier at a Holiday Inn Express!!!!.

We would definitely stay again.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/2/07
Our room was impecccably clean and well furnished. Every staff member we encountered was friendly and helpful. There was a huge party on the 1st and 2nd floors but we never heard a peep. I can't remember when I've had such quick room service in a big hotel anywhere.

poor choice for the money charged
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/5/07
On our 3 day visit to spend time with our son who is attending ODU we decided to stay on the waterfront for a change. Our son scoped out the area for us and suggested we try the Renaissance. It was a little steep for our pocketbook but we thought we would splurge. Our room, with AAA discount, was 180 a night plus taxes,+ a 10 dollar a day charge for parking, etc. For that price I don't want mold on my shower curtain. I want the size bed I asked for. I want courteous, friendly people behind the desk that seemed happy that we chose their place to stay during our time in Portsmouth. Location was a plus but next time I will stay in Norfolk. I will not return to this hotel again and do not recommend anyone else do so. You are paying for location and some glitzy hallways.

Never Again
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/19/07
I along a with another colleague stayed at the hotel for a 3 day conference. We made reservations well in advance. We had requested a double room. On our copy of the reservation we had been guaranteed a double room. When we arrived on the 7th, we were told we were getting a room with one king size bed and there was nothing that could be done. I had to request a bed be brought to our room. A bed about the size of a coffee table was delivered to our room (I'm 6'3"). It wasn't until the next day when I complained to the manager that we were finally given a double room(with a great view of the roof). Also when we made the reservation, we asked if a "State Voucher" would be an acceptable form of payment. The individual that took the reservation assured us this would be okay. The day we cked out, the individual working the desk told us the voucher's were no good. I had to place the bill on my personal credit card which also means I have to wait and get reimbursed from the state. I'm going to warn other official business travelers from staying at this hotel so they do not have to experience the same problems we did.

MANAGEMENT IS TERRIABLE
THE WATER MAKES THE VIEW OF THIS HOTEL..BUT THE ATTITUDE OF MANAGEMENT IS TERRIABLE AND THATS WHATS GOING TO RUN TRAVELERS, AND PEOPLE AWAY FROM THE ESTABLISHMENT...MANAGEMENT FEELS THEY CAN TALK TO YOU ANYWAY AND THROW YOU OUT WHENEVER THEY FELL LIKE WITHOUT ANY REASONS...AND WHEN GIVEN ONE DUE TO THERE RUDENESS...THEY DISRESPECT YOU AS A CITIZEN AND MAKE UP ONE THAT NEVER EXIST TO MAKE UP FORM THERE RUDENESS....WITNESS PUTTING PEOPLE OUT OF THE ESTABLISMENT FOR NO REASON WAS UNCALL FOR....THIS MUST STOP BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT...INNOCENT PEOPLE AT THAT

Great view of Elizabeth River, dry docks and Norfolk waterfront
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/8/06
The location of this hotel is great if you do not need to travel back and forth to Norfolk (the tunnel can be quite slow during rush hours). The entrance to the hotel is a long way from the lobby and then to get to the rooms, another long walk through the main lobby to get to the elevators. Can be troublesome with luggage. Also, the parking garage is a hassle as it is not part of the hotel and a room key is needed when exiting and entering each time so it can track hotel parking, plus there is a daily charge for parking. The room was very nice, had a great view. Housekeeping staff seemed very slow and most could not speak English so communication was difficult if not impossible. We stayed over a week and sometimes waited as late as 3:00 p.m. to have the room cleaned. Staff was friendly and helpful. Concierge level staff were especially friendly and made the stay delightful. Food was just average, nothing special. We will stay here again in the future because the price is right for the quality of hotel.
