A Comedy of Errors
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/07/06
A group of us stayed at the Hayden in June 2005. (We had booked a month before.) We arrived 7 hours late, from overseas, to find the elevator was not working. We had to carry our luggage to the 5th floor. We were not offered storage nor help. This is 6 in the morning and my mother-in-law's room was not ready (We had paid for the previous night.) The night clerk was unable to clean the room and suggested my 80 year mother-in-law sleep on the floor. After being so sleep deprived, I lost it. They finally found a room for her on the 6th floor ...... My husband and I were given a "suite" on the 5th floor. My husband who is 6ft 2in, could not sit on the toilet w/o hitting his knees on the sink. No toiletries or linens. But we were so tired we didn't care. After some sleep, we switched to a "delux" room on the same floor which was more spacious then the "suite" It had a nice tiled bathroom and a decent bed. Working AC. Noise was from the hall, but we had several family members around us, so no problem.. After that, things settled down. The elevator was fixed. Everyone had a clean and mostly renovated room.... The reason you stay here is for the price. Rooms are hit or miss because of the construction. And the convience to the upper West side cannot be beat.. This is an OLD NYC hotel. You might say it has character or you might say it is a work in progress.Don't come if you are looking for service. Service is indifferent. But if you speak Spanish (even a little) you will go far with the housekeeping staff...Keep your expectations LOW and you'll enjoy your stay...

Good Location, Good Value
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 04/13/06
I stayed at The Hayden Hotel in April, 2006. I got a single room w/private bath. The bathroom was literally 3 ft. wide by about 12 ft. long but it was very clean, had new tile and new fixtures, and I was never without hot water. Showerhead was one of those typically weak, watersaver kinds found in most motels. I had 2 twin beds in my room even though I had requested a double bed but I didn't ask for a change because a twin was fine for me. One of the twin beds was hard as a rock. The other was a little softer but still too firm for my taste. The room was heated by radiator which worked fine and there is a window that opens when you need fresh air. I was on the 7th floor, very far from street noise so I slept well. The only noise problem I experienced was because the door to my room seemed to be too thin to keep the noise of guests in the halls out. I could hear people talking and walking to their rooms at 1, 2 and 4 in the morning but once they got inside their rooms the noise was gone. The lighting in my room was OK but the lightbulb in the bathroom was very dim. They did change it for me when I asked. My room cost $140 a night not including the ridiculous 14.5% city tax. For New York prices at the last minute, this was about the lowest price around. The Hayden is located 1 block from a 24-hour diner, 1 block from a 24-hour Duane Reade drugstore, and 2 blocks from the subway. A very convenient location! The room was small but clean. Night desk staff was more helpful than the day desk staff. I peeked into the shared bathrooms and they were very large and also very clean. I would stay there again and recommend this place to friends. This could work for a family if you have a small family or want to get 2 rooms.

Great European Style Budget Hotell
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 01/04/06
I am afraid to tell people about this place lest the secret get out. Stayed here for a week in June of this year [2005] and had no major issues. Only problem we had was low water pressure in the showers. But otherwise this is a great hotel if you are planning on sightseeing as rooms are kind of small, but serve their purpose. Definitely will stay here again when I am back in NYC

My experience was all good......
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 01/03/06
I stayed at the hotel in early May of 2005. The location is exceptional -- I'd rather be there than in mid-town any day. I was there alone, in a single room with a shared bath. My room was small, adequated and spotless, the bath looked new and was also spotless and had super water pressure in the large stall shower. My son joined me for one night and we had a two bedded room with a shared bath on another floor and everything was just as nice as the nights I was alone. All day and evening, I saw cleaning ladies working and saw trash I had put in the bathroom trash can during the evening had already been cleaned out an hour later. The rooms were small -- they reminded me of inexpensive places I stayed in Europe, but I did not see any bugs. As a native New Yorker, transplated to VA, I did not go to NYC to watch TV, I wanted to see "home" and walk the soles off of my shoes. I just wanted a clean, comfortable place to sleep, change clothes and bathe and that's what I got. There was construction going on, so I guess we were in the renovated part of the hotel because it was far better than what was described by people who have stayed there since I was there.

Nasty.... Dark....... Dirty.......
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/27/05
The rooms were horrible dirty walls, roaches, mice.. The sink is in the same room as the couch. There were roach traps under the bed. I would never stay there or suggest anyone else to stay there....

VALUE is what you get
By miguel, 10/18/05
My friend and I got to Manhattan from Toronto ahead of schedule and this hotel let us check in early. Had our room been occupied, we would have had to sit around for nine hours, exhausted from the bus ride(not recommending) with all our luggages. Not that this is a guarantee, but hotel management acted humanely with the options they had, to accomodate their customers. One of the best part about our trip was the peace of mind coming into the hotel and finding our room to be clean, maintained and functional(6thfloorprivatebath). This made coming back to the hotel, from a day of exploring the biggest city in the world, soothing without the sense of dissatisfaction. With this location(close to transit), the price(excellent for manhattan), and the service(as you've read), the feeling of getting what you've paid for or maybe even more is present. The things that would raise the value of this place would be a fridge as addition to its ammenities, and free local phone service.
