Broken appliances, tattered linens, dirty bathtub
Marriott (Fairfield / Residence Inn) used to be a symbol for clean & comfortable accomodations for a budget traveler and courteous service. This time around my experience was totally out of the ordinary and had to leave with an entirely bitter impression about Marriott. They have definitely fallen in terms of service & value for money.
We booked our entire vacation package using Travelocity. When I called a couple days before traveling to confirm my Travelocity reservation and to specify a room, I encountered a rather terse agent who told me that everythings was OK.
When I called back, ( afew hours later) to enquire about the possibility for an extra bed room, I was shocked when they said they cannot find my reservation. It took about 4 hours and two days of calling to sort out the problem. I eventually called Travelocity and had the agent sort out the issue. I called the hotel again to ensure that everything was in order and enquired how my reservation was canceled. The front desk gal told me that the property manager noted that my wife called to cancel our completely prepaid travelocity reservation. I insisted that they trace a record of the call and prove that we called to cancel. I suggested that we were staying for 8 nights and made all the flight/hotel/attractions reservations thru travelocity and it is absurd that we could cancel just the hotel at such a short notice.
Cindy Diggs the property manager was unapologetic and did not make any attempt to remedy the inconvenience due to time spent and loss of peace of mind.
When we arrived at the hotel @ 8PM, the room given us was old, the fridge/microwave/dishwasher were cheap and old. The dish washer made such a racket that we decided never to turn the dishwasher at night time.
The spare blanket appeared to be used, there were folds and hairs in it. The bathtub had hairs in it and it was dimly lit. It was too late to change but the last straw was the room heat in the bedroom was broken. I called the front desk @ 4am and showed the boy how the bedroom was cold while the sitting room was warm. My wife and kid decided to sleep on the couch and the floor, while my senior parent were sleeping in the bedroom which was cold. I was afraid they may catch a cold and our vacation might get ruined.
The next day we had our room changed. This was no different from our earlier room, but atleast the bathtub was clean and the linens were fresh. They provided a room credit for half days room tarriff for the inconvenience.
The next few days we adjusted to the room, tired of complaining and just got done with our trip. The heater in the new room was also broken but it did not get as cold as earlier and we managed by opening the bedroom door and bundling up during the cooler nights.
The early AM buffet was always busy and it was tough to find a table and there were 2 toasters for about 150-200 guests. If we bring the food upstairs to our room and leave it standing for a evening snack, we would see tiny bugs/flies emerge from the danishes. Its hard to see how these bugs can enter the room which appeared to be well sealed and clean.
All in all, the least this hotel could do was to apologize for the inconvenience caused when they canceled my reservation without cause and instead of lying, remedy the situation. Shop around for a better deal .
