Not as advertised.
My wife and I stayed in one of the rooms in the Country Gardens Inn on a recent trip to Carmel and Monterey. The brochure and the website both made it look like a pleasant, somewhat luxurious place to stay. Unfortunately, this couldn't have been further from the truth. Our room was extremely run down, with flimsy furniture, tears in the screen door, and bare drywall patching in multiple places on the walls. Also, the room smelled dank, as if perhaps the building had started to rot.
Another shortcoming was that the room faced the dismal-looking courtyard and pool. The supposed "gardens" looked mostly like weeds poking up through the courtyard bricks. And the brick courtyard gathers heat, so it felt like an oven even in March. This, coupled with our room not having air conditioning, made it unpleasant to be in the hot, smelly room for any length of time. I would hate to see what it would be like in the summer.
The only positive was that it was moderately clean. But moderately clean accommodations don't warrant the exorbitant prices they charge. A high-end inn this is not. My advice is travel a couple miles to Carmel or Monterey and get a much nicer room for less money.
