Calderwood Inn, Healdsburg

Very enjoyable stay. Margaret was very accomodating and a pleasure to be with. Very good location.

Wow! What a beautiful place and what a transformation it has become since my grandparents lived there and I used to visit often as a young boy back in the early to mid-sixties. I was between 9 and 12 years old then--I'm in my mid-fifties now and live clear across the country--and I remember many things about that house and the surrounding grounds. I remember there used to be a large palm tree right next to the back portion of the house with a slide like ride connected to another large tree, (palm, I believe), located further back on the property that we used to paly on. I remember also a small pond with large-looking gold fish in it close to the palm tree. We also used to kill chickens and then take them into the kitchen and romove the innards and then cook them up. Great chicken! I remember we ate all our meals in the kitchen, never in the dining room. From the pictures I've seen I believe I recognize a certain bedroom we used to sleep in. I especially remember waking up in the early morning to the droning sound of trucks on the nearby highway. (It's funny the things you remember like that that stick with you). Time has dulled a lot of memories I used to have of that place, but not my love for it. It was always my favorite house. My wife and I are planning to drive out to Healdsburg in the next year or so and stay at the Calderwood a few days. I want to take a detailed look around and hopefully bring some of those old, forgotten memories back again. JOHN

Staying at Calderwood Inn made us think of Healdsburg as our second home town. The inn is enchanting, the rooms, the gardens, the verandas of the inn – all are in immaculate condition, inviting the guests to enjoy the warms and hospitality. My husband and I stayed at the Wilson room on the ground floor, very quiet and spacious room (more like a suite), with its own porch with French doors facing the back yard. The room is decorated in reach bronze and burgundy tones, has a very comfortable bed, a TV set, CD player and other luxuries such as a fireplace that we plan to enjoy when we return in Healdsburg in the fall. Quirine, the inn manager treated us to wonderful wines of the Wilson winery and we shared stories while enjoying wine and cheeses at the porch. We finished the evening with a very delightful dinner at the Dry Creek Kitchen. Wish we could have the morning lasting longer, with the fog, charm of the house, and fantastic breakfast prepared by Quirine for us. By taking care of the inn Quirine sets an atmosphere of amity, comfort and positive energy. There was nothing that could set us in a less than excellent mood during our short stay in the Calderwood Inn, it was a truly magic place.

The inn and gardens are beautiful and located in a great part of wine country. Most wineries are a short drive from the inn and downtown is very quaint (but shuts down at 5:00 PM). The restaurants in town are average. The breakfasts at the inn are wonderful but only served at 9:00 AM no exceptions. The rooms are small but adequate. The bathrooms are meant for one person at a time so forget about applying make-up while your husband shaves! Tall people may not be comfortable in the rooms since the ceiling and shower heads are low. There are very nice touches to welcome guests such as mid day appetizers and wine and the dessert and port at night. However, don't expect to feel welcomed by the innkeeper's personality, which creates an atmosphere which is neither warm nor friendly. The setting is very formal especially breakfast. Pay attention to your manners and the rules...such as use the back door at all times even if you want to sit on the porch, do not sit at the table prior to being invited to breakfast as these can lead to being reprimanded by the innkeeper. Overall, the price is right especially for the location, the breakfasts are gourmet, and the inn is beautiful.

The Inn is beautiful. Just a few blocks from the plaza. The rooms are small, but the dining room, living room and porch are large yet cozy and welcoming at the same time. We were served crackers and spreads with wine in the early evening and homemade macaroons and port in the later evening. The breakfast was awesome but only available at 9 a.m. no exceptions! The jacuzzi bath in our room was the best! The only bad thing was that we were not allowed to have any food or drink in our room, besides the bottled water provided.
