If I Had Guests Coming Into Town

.... and still lived in San Francisco (and not Oakland) I would send them to the Marines Memorial. My husband and I stayed there for two weekend nights, and the location just can't be beat. For tourists, the location is ideal for the theater area, Union Square, Market Street shopping, etc. Also, for night life, Harry Denton's Starlight Room is just down the street, and you're in good shape to hit up clubs in SOMA, the Marina, the Tenderloin, etc.
The rooms, though smallish, are very comfortable, and well maintained. The free happy hour is great, and the food in the restaurant is quite good. You can eat upstairs and have drinks for a great evening-starter before going out and hitting the town. The complimentary breakfast is an actual breakfast, not just the run of the mill rolls and juice. We're talking eggs, sausage, bacon, pancakes. Hearty food to start your day on.
The staff was very helpful and friendly, and even the other guests maintained an atmosphere of kindness and politeness. Consider the Marines Memorial for your next stay in SF!
