If you want fun, don't come here
By Betsy, 01/19/10
We recently went to the Barcelo for our honeymoon. We came home disappointed. The resort itself was pretty nice. The rooms were ok and the beach was ok. It was never acknowledged that it was our honeymoon. We called ahead and let them know and then talked about it again at check in. We felt let down that nothing was done although that alone did not wreck our trip. What did wreck our trip was the horrible food and poor treatment in the evenings. We chose a resort that said it had a 24 hour self serve alcohol and snacks because we wanted to be free to set our own schedule. When we tried to play cards with some other guests one night we literally had the lights shut off above us at 11pm with no warning. We were not being loud or even drinking and the hotel basically sent us to bed. The next night they just gradually took away the alcohol and then shut off the tap. If you want to go somewhere that you can be awake past midnight even one time, do not go to the Barcelo. The food was terrible and we were left feeling hungry every day. Nothing tasted like we expected and nothing had any taste. Everything was bland and luke warm. Plus we scheduled some excursions with our resort and when we got home they had overcharged us by $30. Once we got back we couldn't change anything. Overall if we hadn't met some fun people we would have had a horrible honeymoon. I would definitely not recommend this resort to anyone.

We really can't wait to go back!!!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/30/09
The room was perfect. The frig was stocked everyday with snax, soda, beer. We tried all the restaurants,no problem getting in and loved the food. The beach and water were clean and beautiful. Plenty of chairs to sit in. The pool was huge but we didn't try it because we like the beach more. Drinks were excellent! There is a room with computersthat you can use for a small charge, books to fread and snax..Also a store to buy gifts. The only thing I did not like was they tried ro push a trip to a sister hotel and I have a feeling it was a timeshare sell..Very annoying..Also the male help was alittle too friendly. All and all I would recommend it. Agood mix of people from all over the world. The noise died down after a certain time at night. Slept great!

Very nice for the price!
By beach bum, 04/17/09
I booked this hotel only 2 weeks before we left, and then looked through some of the reviews. I was a little concerned after reading them, but once we got there the worries were gone. The place it very nice and on the smaller side, which I liked. There was a nice mix of people, families, spring breakers, singles. The food was very good and we ate at all 3 resturants and the buffet. The drinks were a little weak, but if you asked them for a double they were perfectly fine. The employees of the hotel were great, except for the tour they try to get you to go on to visit another hotel. They will promise you alot to sign you up for it, and then when you show up things change..didn't end up doing it. The beach is a little different, since it is in the canal, but it really didn't bother me, it was nice to see the boats go by. Im already thinking of going back with my kids in November!

if your looking to go there for spring break when your eighteen years old it is a good idea, other than that going here for a nice vacation is not the best choice. First the alcohol drinks are horrible. The only beer available is corona on draft an the mixed drinks are extremely weak. The only positive about the drinks is that they are endless. If you want a good drink go an buy yourself a bottle an make your own. Secondly, the food is terrible. After two days of eating at the buffet we were sick of it literally and after that we were eating out everyday every chance we had. So the benefits ofan all inclusive trip are no longer beneficial. If you want a good seat at the pool make sure you get out there before 9:30 or they will be all taken up by ten. The beach is no more however that is not the hotels fault unless they start tearing down the pool. The only positive things i can say is that the atmosphere is fun. They try to incorporate games an music while hanging out at the pool. The lobby bar can be great pregame or a stop after coming home from the bar. In conclusion our trip was memorable but not in the most positve way. So save your time an your money an do not choose this hotel as your destination in cancun, mexico.

Horrible! Stay away!!
By Emily, 03/18/09
I'm not one for writing reviews. In fact, this is the first time I've ever been so horrified as to feel compelled to write a review. I stayed 4 days and 3 nights at Barcelo Costa in March 2009. In all fairness, the hotel itself was relatively clean. I had a minor ant invasion in my room, but the property was okay overall. It was the food and the service that shocked me. First, if you're going to Mexico in hopes of some strong margaritas and some fabulous guacamole, this is not the place for you! The drinks were extraordinarily weak and the food was abhorrently inedible. The "snack bar" was a a series of cheeses that had sat under a heat lamp so long they looked wilted and diseased. The restaurants, with the exception of breakfast, served nothing but sad examples of Mexican cuisine. The bread and tortillas were stale, the meat was old, the vegetables were wilted and the desserts were poorly made and appeared to have sat out for a minimum of 3 days. Second, the service was the worst I have encountered in my life. I have traveled internationally to numerous destinations and have never experienced the extraordinary lack of service as was offered at this hotel. For example, I requested help confirming my shuttle to the airport. I was told by every employee of the hotel that they "did not have an outside line" and that "I would have to call from my room." I had an extremely difficult time believing that a hotel had no outside phone line, but was even more horrified when I was charged $6.00 for a 2 minute local phone call. I could talk for days about how disappointed I was in this trip. I had read some of the other reviews and thought it would be okay, but it wasn't. It was a horrible experience. Save yourself the trouble--stay elsewhere!!

NEVER AGAIN
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 02/20/09
no hot water, beds were harder than the tiled floor, we requested an ocean view room and got stuck in a room we could hardly see the ocean, the beach was full of cigarette butts, the hair dryer in room smelled like cigarette smoke when i turned it on, the last day and a half we were out of water completely. Cancun was fun but dont stay at this resort.

money stolen
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 02/05/09
we thought the hotel was lovely but the first 4 days into the holiday my cardigan was taken from the room. we had a room safe deposit box with all our money and personal items in and wasnt until we were on the flight home when me and my partner looked in our wallets and found them both empty! over 1500 euros was stolen and the only place it could have been taken from was our room as our bags never left our sight. no sign or a break in so must have been a member of staff! bad experience and would not recommend this hotel

Fantastic Holiday
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/28/08
We visited Barcelo Costa Cancun from the 10th August until the 24th August 2008. Our stay in Cancun was amazing, the best ever holiday. The hotel was very clean and the staff were all really nice. The pool area was lovely and clean but I can't blame the German's for bed hogging here it was the British, make sure you get your lounger by 8am or your stuffed!! We prefered the beach again this was beautiful and clean but again get your lounger early if you want some shade by lunch time. The hotel itself is very different to how it looks in the brochure it looks older and slighly shabbier in real life than the artists impression pictures but overall is very clean. Rooms were clean and there were fresh towels every day. Mini bars were topped up every day and were free, topped up with larger, soft drinks and water. Our only complaint was that our balcony was so small it did not even fit a chair on the balcony however we did have a lovely pool view and it was a good excuse to stay in the bar for longer!!! The a la carte restaurants at the hotel were beautiful, the food in them were of really high standard, I can really recommend the steaks in the seafood restaurant. The buffet restaurant provided a good range of food and there was a different theme each night however one night we didn't go for our meal until the late sitting at 9.30pm after that I was very poorly for 5 days not being able to eat or drink anything but i didn't let this spoil my holiday. This holiday is deffinately not a clubby holiday, yes there were bars but they were all charging anything between 20 and 60 dollars entry so quite a pricey night out. Coco Bongo is a must it's absolutely fab loved it never been to anything like that before it was amazing a cross between circus acts, triutes to stars and Vegas all rolled into one. Going to Cancun the jungle tour on the speedboats are a must what great fun! Xel Ha is a must a beautiful natural lagoon where you can snorkel and swim a great day out. Chichen Itza and Tulum are musts too what a sight Tulum's beach is breath taking, just amazing!! Also another must is the Captain Hooks ship is a must very reasonable 80 dollars each for lobster meal, entertainment and disco, they have a huge fight with the other two ships in the sea with cannons firing sword fights and pirates swinging un harnessed from ship to ship across to the other ships. We are definately going back to Mexico next year although we will probably go to the Mayan Rivera, we did pay alot for Cancun but would prefer to pay more for more facilities at the hotel because there were only two bars with not that many seats so many people ended up on sun loungers around the pool but it was really relaxing with the hanging lamps. It was an amazing holiday and would recommend this for couples.

This place was awful
By livelovelaugh, 07/27/08
The rooms are tiny and have an awful view. Our air conditioning was out two of the four days we were there. The room we got through the travel agency didnt even have a tub. The ceiling vent kept falling out while we were trying to sleep. The beach is VERY small and full of topless women. (Im sure for some this is a plus) The servers at the bar were rude and acted as if I was bothering them when I came up. However they did have corona on tap throughout the place so you could serve yourself. The Mexican resteraunt was great. Our server, Cesar, was fun and awesome, the drinks were good and the food was good. We went out on the pirate ship for dinner and it was so so fun. We had a really great time on it. All in all the place did not feel like a luxury resort in anyway I think I would have been as happy at the motel 6. Palace resort is definitly the way to go in Mexico.
