Beautiful grounds, but the service is horrible
By ,
The Point at Poipu is well-worn, like an old favorite sweater you wear to watch TV. It could use a major updating, which I understand they are getting ready to do next year. The grounds are well kept and beautiful. The interior was on the budget end of things but still nice. If you get an oceanfront unit on the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th floor the view is breathtaking, with sunsets and waves pounding on the lava rock shore. Every year we've seen a few whales from the balcony and endangered turtles in the surf. Down the road at Poipu Beach we've also seen rare endangered Monk Seals. I fell asleep on the sand and woke up with one about 25 feet away, sunning himself, too. The pool is lovely. It has a sandy shore, and the water is treated so there is no detectable chlorine. A previous reviewer said it was too shallow to swim laps. Most of it is, but on the near side there is a 4 ft area with a stripe on the bottom meant for swimming laps - perfect. There is also a kiddie area and a hot tub. There is a separate hot tub for adults on the other side of the resort. Perfect for those who like a little quiet time. Heads up - if you plan on lots of people in your unit, the fold-out couch is so bad it can't be slept on. Except maybe unless you are six years old or younger. It sags and metal bars and springs dig into the body. My teenage neice ended up putting the couch cushions on the floor and sleeping on that. The roll-aways are the same. I really do want to mention the service. Housekeeping, maintenance, and the bellmen are wonderful. The workers are friendly and when you thank them they have a big smile - you can tell they like making your stay a good one. The front desk and concierge are much less friendly and much less helpful. It is very clear very quickly that they say they are there to serve you but their main (and I think only) interest is to get you to go to a sales presentation. Do not even bother to go near the concierge desk. They will pressure you until you crack. It was so unrelenting and so unpleasant that it ruined our vacation. Half way through our stay we just quit going to any desk. We booked everything directly and found it saved us money as well as sparing us from being harrassed. If by any chance you do go to a presentation, look out. We went to one last year and they didn't let us go for 3-1/2 hours. They used sleezy used car dealer sales tactics, trying to blend numbers and confuse people into buying. They won't let you take the materials away to think about it or crunch the numbers yourself. They won't give you your reward, a free activity, unless ;you stay until they say you can go. Had we been thinking straight we would have just gotten up after 30 minutes and left. So, it's a very nice place but the service and the unrelenting pressure is terrible. They've taken a beautiful property and ruined it by how they treat their guests.

Still love this place.
By ,
The first time I stayed here it was when they were called Embassy way back around Jan 2000. It was amazing there was a huge Christmas tree, breakfast every morning down by the pool, happy hour up at the lobby, discover scuba for kids they learn in the pool then can later go on an off shore experience. I'll admit it's changed over the last 10 years but its still a beautiful place. The beach, although not always swimmable, is very nice. Sometimes we just go out there with binoculars and watch for whales. Theres luaus held in the area and all have been an amazingly fun experience. The cliffs right at the end of the path have a little trail you can hike up into. I was there last christmas and went and climbed down part of the cliff and found all sorts of interesting things shells with the creatures still in them and molting crusteceans. Nearby is Old Koloa town its such a cute place with all the little shops. Everytime we go out there we go to Lapperts Ice cream they make delicious treats. My personal favorite is the guava sherbert. One last magical thing about the area is on new years if you go for a very short walk they have fireworks on the beach. But overall this place is nice it needs a little work but still amazing. I'll keep coming back for many years to come.

We want to go back ASAP!!!!
By ,
Beautiful place to stay. We stayed here for our honeymoon and wouldn't go anywhere else! The view of the Pacific from the room is spectacular. Rooms are spacious, clean, and nice! Very laid back atmosphere- everyone was friendly and helpful- and also very romantic!. Loved the pool, hot tub, and bar- all great!!! I do wish that the breakfast buffet was included- a little pricey for what you get! Concierge was extremely helpful in helping us plan our activities. Several nice shops and towns close by. (Old Kaloa town is a fave!) All parts of the island are easily driven to in a rental car. Beatiful beach down the street. Overall the atmosphere and stay were beyond our expectations- this is one of the reasons Kauai is our favorite Island. We would be hard pressed to stay anywhere else. Would recommend this to anyone no matter what the occasion!!!

Nice, but could be better.
By ,
The rooms were very nice, clean, and we enjoyed them, but we did not have a wide screen tv. They do charge 9.95 day for the use of the internet, but they do not tell you that if you have more than one computer...that charge is 9.95 PER COMPUTER! Also you are charged a $6.09 State tax per day on your room, which we had not been charged at other Sunterra/Diamond Resorts. The resort itself is very nice, but nothing compared to Kannapali Beach Resort in Maui which is the same amount of points if you are a Diamond Resort Owner. The pool area has alot to be desired. Again nothing compared to the resort in Maui(formerly Embassy Suites). The staff that we dealt with was fine. But you don't get anything extra for your bucks, other than really nice welcome breakfast the day after you arrive. Great views of the ocean, even though you must walk a bit to a beach. The morning sunrise was nice to see, as usually we are on the sides of the island where we see sunsets. The grounds are very well maintained. Weather in late January this year has been quite windy, rainy, but nice with the sun in and out. But I think I will stick with Maui!!

Our home away from home
By ,
After living in Hawaii for several years and wanting a small piece of the Islands to call our own, we bought into the Point in 2005 and love going back each year. In 2007 we took my mom and dad along for the trip and with 5 people in the condo, we had plenty of room. The staff is fantastic and the resort is beautiful. The only beach at the condo is at the pool, but there are several options nearby if you want to go lay at the beach. The lava rocks that run into the ocean make for fantastic wave action and add to the scenery. You can also view sea turtles near the rock edge and we found it fascinating to watch the turtles maneuver around the surf. Two great golf courses are near the Point (Kiahuna and Poipu Bay) so you can be out at a course within 10 – 15 minutes. Lots of restaurants (including Puka Dog) and great snorkeling near the Beach House, minutes from the condo. I cannot say enough about this resort and look forward to going back each year to unwind and enjoy the Islands.

We own a week, so we might be biased...but
By ,
We love the Point. We purchased 6 years ago when it was the Embassy Suites and have kept our Ocean Front Week without converting to Points and use it without fail, every year. The staff is warm and friendly and we bought with the plan of using it each year as a vacation we had to take. It has not been a hardship to be here. Did we mention the beautiful location, the turtles swimming in the surf just off the reef on the edge of the property, the lovely pool and oh yes, the location in Poipu Beach. The units are beautiful and have granite counters in the kitchen, marble in the bathrooms (which have great water pressure) and, in the units we have stayed in for the last 6 years, two spacious bedrooms and two great bathrooms. As far as people's complaints about noise...it was only on this last vacation that we noticed foot noise from the unit above us, but it was a minor inconvenience as we were too busy watching turtles, snorkeling at Poipu Beach and taking sunrise walks along the shore and to Poipu Beach to really care! We would agree that the Grill needs to work on it's menu and execution. Previous years have been much better. The bar still makes great drinks......try the Lava Flow! The kitchens in the units are great, though, so try a little cooking on your own. Koloa Fish Market has great fresh catch every day. We love the Point at Poipu!

We go every year!
By ,
We purchased 2 weeks at this beautiful resort our first visit. We have visited all of the islands, and Kauai is my favorite. Our teenage son, however loves Maui- but he also likes Kauai. (We also own 2 weeks at the Maui Embassy too-it too is a great property.!) The rooms in Poipu are large, and very accommodating. 2 Bedrooms are so convenient. There are window a/c units, and they keep it very cool. Having washer/dryer is also a great feature. A strange coincidence happened, however, at one of the points. I fell on the unstable area right off of the path in 2005, and broke my ankle. I wasn't even climbing, and it was an area that looks relatively flat. We took my Mother in 2006, and she broke her elbow by a fall at the same exact spot. She had to have surgery at Wilcox Hospital in Lihue. It did put a slight damper on the visit. Yet, the hospital, surgeon, and staff were so great. My only recommendation is that there should be signage, and/or flatter terrain, since it is right off of the walking path. The Hotel staff and Management were very nice considering our mishap. Overall, this is a beautiful property, and can't wait to vist it every year.
