Savoy Bed & Breakfast Hotel, Kansas City

...but you are helping the local community if you stay here. It is close to the City Market and Quality Hill areas. It is fairly quiet except for occasional outside noises. It is historic (Harry Truman worked there) and the complimentary breakfast (with lobster bisque) is superb. The Savoy Grille is amazing to visit if only for the decor. Amazing murals, amazing lobby, and labyrinth-like entrance. For the money (if you shop for cheap rates) and for the amenities, it is an excellent value. So it is old and a little rundown, there are a few tiles missing in places and some places where the stone is cracked, but the beds are comfortable...where else can you stay in a major city for a good rate, free parking, and with a complimentary (well) cooked breakfast.

This is a vintage hotel. It has alot of potential but needs a massive amount of work. We stayed on a Saturday night. My spouse booked the room online Friday morning but at check-in the clerk told us that he had no record of our reservation and therefore had booked the room we reserved online. There was no offer for discounting our nightly fee due to booking error. The pictures of the rooms online do not show what the room truly looks like. Old peeling 1980's wall paper, water stains on the celing and it had a dirty feel about it. We checked in and then went out for the evening. We noted that the bathroom was cold (and without any washcloths) so we opened the door so that later use would be a bit warmer. Upon return we had no heat. No one would answer the desk phone and the window unit AC right next to the bed was not sealed. It approx 20F and windy. The room was very cold and uncomfortable. When we checked out and were able to report that we had no heat the lady at the desk told us that was unfortunate and proceded to run my credit card and wish us a nice afternoon. We did not partake of the "free" breakfast on Sunday morning. The hotel had a very off-center feel about it. Such as tables and chairs set in the front lobby but not arranged in a manner that is conducive with lounging and socializing with friends. It was not a cozy/comfortable place to stay. It could be a nice classic hotel if a large amount of time, money and care were gifted to this historic building. We will not be returning and it has left me with such a distaste for historic "remodels" that I will probably do an onsite visit instead of an online viewing if I want to visit a non-franchise hotel. I have not been to the Hotel Phillips but I have been to the Elms resort in Excelsior Springs, which is about 30 miles from KC. The Elms is wonderful. Tastefully remodeled including onsite spa and 3 dining options. They were able to compelte the remodel (several years ago) yet keep the classic charm of the original hotel. It is my favorite hotel to stay in for a "getaway" weekend.

Just blocks from the convention center and on a college student budget this hotel offers promises. From reading the website and being there in person it is not at all what we expected. From the first time you set foot in the door, it has a very old look, feel and smell. Everything is off center the elevator is hard to find and it does not go the every floor. There is not a ice and soda machine on every floor, you have to go look for it. The room we were assigned eerily had a plaque with someones name on the front door. I was told by the front desk clerk, that the rooms at one time were rented out (they just never took the name plaques off of the door, weird). The room was old smelling, with old furniture, the ventilation was not good in the room and the room overall did not "feel" clean. Overall the room was great for a college students budget but my friends and I agree we would rather pay a little more to have a more clean and relaxing room. I have to say I did appreciate the historic value of this hotel. I was definitely like stepping back in time.

I have nothing good to say about this Hotel It smells, it's dirty, staff is creepy. It is a Resident Hotel which they say nothing about when you book. The elavator alarm was going off and I had to tell the staff they then had to call someone off site cause the people there didn't have a clue, my phone didn't work and it took them a long time to fix it again having to call someone off site. Breakfast was nasty, magazines and TV in room were really old and the bathroom floor was sticky felt dirty when I left that place.

I called Savoy direct (5/2008) spoke to reservations explained I needed a handicapped room for a paraplegic. I was told they had one handicapped room. I made my reservations was put on hold while they moved around someone so I could have the room. My husband and I arrived and the first alarm that went off in my head was stairs!!!! I left my husband in the car went in to find the handicap entrance and found there was none. After complaining to the manager, “why did (so and so) make reservations for a handicapped person and not tell me there were stairs and no entrance for handicapped”. (So and so) promptly said she didn’t know it was for handicap and they had moved me from the one handicap room they had and had given it yet to another. The gist of this is you cannot believe what the Savoy says and they will argue the situation with you. It is really ashamed that at this time 2008 that there are still places out there that limit our disabled from enjoying the accommodations and architectural marvels in life. When with today’s knowledge and technology all is needed is a porch lift in the lobby.

HAD THE BEST EXPEIENCE AT THE SAVOY THAN WE'VE HAD AT ANY HOTEL . PRICE AND SERVICE WAS EXECELLENT , ROOM WAS VERY WELL DONE AND COMFORTABLE BED AND FURNITURE. THE SAVOY GRILL WAS FANTASTIC , WE WERE TREATED LIKE ROYLATY . BETTER THAN LONDON!!!!!! BY A LONG SHOT!!

We stayed there over Xmas and were the only guests in the hotel. We paid $150/night and the room was depressing, not at all quaint, and the bed was extremely uncomfortable. The only antique in the room was a counsel TV that was straight out the 60s. The radiator ahd a hole in it and made horrible noises that kept us up most of the night. The bathroom was dingy and scary. The only bright spot was the dinner at the restaurant, which was as always, excellent. On the downside, we had the complimentary breakfast the next morning and I believe most of it was left overs from the evening before. In total, we spent close to $500 at the hotel during our stay. Shortly after we checked out, I received a phone call from the desk clerk basically accusing us of stealing a picture from the room. When I stated that there weren't any pictures on the walls, she said all the rooms had pictures on the wall. I was livid and still am. I will never stay there again. I wondered why no one else was staying there except us and now I know.

My husband and I were so excited to stay at this hotel. We saw the pictures, and thought it looked so pretty. We were actually celebrating our anniversary. It was the WORST place I have ever stayed. It wasn't very clean, the carpet in our room looked as if it hadn't been steamed cleaned in years. The decorating was ugly and mismatched for a historic B&B, and the service was lousy. They bragged about this amazing breakfast that they were out of half on what was on the menu. I will never go back. Oh, and the price listed is NOT what we were charged. We were charged $45 more for garbage. Do not stay here. It's horrible!!!!!!

There were so many things my husband and I did not like that I should first start with somthing possitive.The parking was free and convient,and the food was great.This is the only thing that was good and the wrest was awful.The room was so damp that we could not sleep well at all for the wet feeling kept waking us,the sheets along with the furniture felt very damp,the room was very dirty(dust thick on all the furnishings,socks became black on the bottoms from walking in them on the carpet,aminaties were sparse to say the least (T.V very small with no way to play a movie since there was hardly much to do in the vacinity unless one wanted to go Hotel hopping).We were referred to this B&B from another of my husbands buisness partners and for our Anniversary and we hated to tell him the truth so we just said he really needed to go back for a lot has changed so he should have a back up reservation somewhere else.We also need to let the resraunt know that while there food is pretty good we have had much better for the value.For two people we spent $146.00 for two salads,two dinners,and two glasses of wine.My husband said that while his food was vey good he couldnt really enjoy it for he felt really priced gouged.I had ordered a seafood soufle and was very dissapointed for the tuna ovrpowered the taste of the shrimp and lobster and was very watery.Sory Savoy but you will not be getting our vote or business in the future. I started going to the Savoy in the 60's for lunch with my dad. As we grew up we would go there for special occasians. The first Time I stayed at thre hotel was in 1990. The hotel is old, that is the charm. The rooms that I have stayed in are always clean, the decor is an atempt for antique, but is really just new /old. This building has ben here for a long time. The best thing to do hear is eat, breackfast like none I have ever had. Dinner at the resturant should be required. If you want the Ritz go elswhere, here there is history. We are going back for my wifes birthday.
