Great staff, good value
By ,
Located about 30 minutes south of Havana, not far from the airport, this is a country hotel on the edge of the town of San Antonio de Los Banos. The staff is wonderfrul with a "we can do it" attitude. Joel, the recreation director, is terrific. The hotel brings in local bands and dancers from the town. I've stayed here numerous times over the years with my students from Canada, each time noticing improvements. Rooms have new TV's with CNN, safes, basic furnature, bathroom showers. The hotel has a huge pool that is kept very clean, restaurant, outdoor grill, 2 bars, 24 hour medical clinic, large foyer, very manicured grounds, new pool furnature, new paint, quieter air condictioners, a well stocked store, boat rentals where the property slopes down to a river. This is not a resort hotel. You will find Cuban families and sports teams staying here, along with international guests. Food is simple but good and plentiful. The hotel staff has a family atmosphere - they take pride in the hotel. The hotel looks after several dogs and cats that roam freely and are very gental, always looking for a pat on the head. This is Cuba off the gated Varadaro tourist track. Good value and experience.

Service with a Smile

A nice sizable swimming pool with adjoining childrens pool. The staff of Las Yagrumas do all within their power to help visitors. They do their best within the limits of the facilities. Food? Well this is Cuba, but have an omelette with breakfast. Evening entertainment by children and young people from the town was very enjoyable and included dancers of real talent.

Boy was I suprised.

Not anything like what I expected. I've never been away from home. It was my first time out the country, and I couln't enjoy my stay. I didnt feel comfortable. The maids were amazing people, very kind. Though, at times the hotel seemed as if to lack something. They need to improve their standards.

Not What It's Cracked Up To Be. Foreigners Beware.
By ,
This Hotel was an interesting experience in patience. If you are considering this hotel for it's "great" amenities, don't. The amenities this hotel had to offer where not that great. I did not enjoy the hotel that much. The pool is nice and spacious, but the staff and many of them, make you feel like your out of place. The guards at the hotel are very friendly, but be forewarned, their english is very minimal. The hotel maids are incredibly nice, and will bend over backwards to help you out. But be warned, the front desk staff are cold and unreceptive. We were down here for religious reasons, and overall the hotel was alright. Yes, there were mangy dogs inside and outside of the hotel. During the day, it was impossible to rest or even take a nap, for all the salsa music blaring from the poolside. The food was not good at all, they do not take the time to prepare it or to warm it up. Most of it has dead flies in the food and the dessert is not worth the try, after eating for about 3 day's here, I got a stomach bug which stayed with my for the duration of my stay. Our room, was a small room with cockroaches literally swarming all inside the shower the first night, but by the second night, they were gone. The location is in the middle of a ghetto, so it's not that great! Overall, this hotel should be overlooked.

flies and dogs
By ,
This hotel has some of the most unfortunate dogs on this earth. They are covered in open sores, mange, scabs and broken legs. The solution was to gather them up & put them in black garbage bags(still alive). The flies in the dinning room were out of control(three dead in the butter and one stuck on the icing of a cake)You spent your meal flopping your arms around to keep them off your cold meal. The table cloths were filthy, the dishes were not clean, the food was cold and the same, day after day, after day, cultery was hard to find.THe Cuban baseball teams stay there, and they get the fresh food while we got the left overs from the night before. There was no butter or milk (too expensive) for the 1st week. No water in the rooms many days, and no hot water many more days, smell of sewer from the bathroom drain(solved by covering it with a mapkin then an ashtray on top) No phone in the room and satilite TV consitited of CNN (maybe). The river is covered by a brown weed and full of garbage. The maids were wonderful, the guards talk loudly all night and some of the staff made you feel like you were imposing. There were only plastic chairs around the cold pool (& not enough) but eventually they found 10 loungers for about 60 people. Happy hour was enjoyable with local entertainment and 2 for 1 rum drinks.
