Surprisingly poor
First, here's what we liked:
1) Location. It is very close to Time Square, Rockefeller Center, 5th Avenue shopping, etc.
2) The size of the rooms are really nice given other Manhattan options.
3) The bathroom was generally nice, though it could have used a railing for entering and exiting the jacuzzi tub.
Everything else falls under didn't like.
1) The staff was generally clueless and borderline rude and major appliances were broken. We asked for a room away from the elevator so the guy at the desk gave us a room right across from one. Our first room had no hot water. Someone was "on their way" to fix it for an hour, making us late to an event. They have us a new room. With a broken air conditioner. It leaked onto the floor and soaked the carpet. It rattled, pinged and generally did not blow cold air.
3) The elevator situation. 2 for 30+ floors. Check-In and Check-Out times were nightmares. They also move slowly.
4) Lack of decor/ambiance. No real paintings or artwork to speak of in our rooms or in the halls. Nice thatched wallpaper, but it seemed like they'd start to make the hotel look nice, but then stop. Bed frame was nice, but the mattress was thin and cheap. Overall, pretty dark. Could have used more lighting. The cool looking lamps over the beds in the pictures don't put out much light and are very cheap. The doors rattle in your unit even when other people in other rooms open and close theirs.
5) No wifi. They did have high speed internet, but not wifi and you have to request a cable (which given the prevalence of wifi, most people don't carry around any more).
6) No quick checkout. Most hotels will now put your bill under your door at the end of your stay. That way, you can see the charges and leave quicker with doing little or nothing at the front desk. Not here. No tv checkout either. Everyone has to go to the desk.
7) No room service. The restaurant was closed the whole time we were there. In New York, you probably won't get it anyway, but who's to say? You should have the option at a nice hotel.
8) No baggage help. Most of the employees stand around. No help with doors, etc. I can compare this to my visit to the Roger Williams where people descended upon me from everywhere to ask to help me with bags, doors, hailing a cab, etc.
Next time, we'll know to avoid it. You should too.
