Perhaps if happy hour incl'd Propofol & Penicillin

On the plus side, it was a charming old place, well decorated, and everyone there was very nice. They do a 5-6 pm happy hour with complimentary wine/beer.
We were in Portland for our 25th wedding anniversary and stayed at the Vintage after reading reviews describing it as one of the nicer, more romantic places to stay in Portland. This review (my first online review) is an attempt to help others make a better decision.
Our room smelled pretty badly (kind of like “old people”, sorry grandma). I thought at first it was part of the "Vintage Plaza charm", but my wife later noticed that the AC vent was filthy (and she contrasted it for me in the room we escaped to the next night at the Westin).
- The shower had mold in it, and the trickle of water representing the shower stream was alternating between scalding hot or freezing cold (causing the showering experience to become an aerobic activity of sorts, so there was that side benefit). And though the accompanying whoops, shrieks, and curses added some comic relief, only for the person not in the shower at the time. We were told by the front desk that they were in process of upgrading some things including fixtures (but all it takes is a bit of bleach guys).
- The mattress. We have a Stearns and Foster at home, so we are used to that kind of mattress. We were told (by the front desk person) that they have Sealy Posturepedic beds, and that people really love them. Personally, I wouldn’t be surprised to find it utilized by homeland security to elicit information from those individuals for whom waterboarding was not effective. Perhaps this is just a personal preference problem, but we have stayed in a lot of nice hotels over the years (and some not so nice ones earlier) and this bed the worst in as long as I can remember. It was hard as a rock (I weigh 175lbs and my wife @125). The two other hotels we stayed at his trip (Hilton and Westin) were fantastic. This being our 25th anniversary trip, we had high expectations for the Vintage (based on internet reviews). We went to bed at 1am, tossed and turned for an hour before calling down and finding out that there were no other beds available, and probably none any different than the one we had anyway. Called again at 3 and 4 to ask whether they were sure. I wish that was the worst of it, but aside from the mattress, my wife felt like she was getting "bitten up by something" while in bed. We finally fell asleep at @ 4am and were both up in pain at 7:30. On my wife's entire upper body, a rash had developed, which spread over her entire body by the end of the day. She was itching and scratching all day. I thought at first that she was exaggerating, but it was really bad. We assume it was due to an allergic reaction to bed linen / towel detergent, but who knows.
Maybe it was just our room (but being our anniversary, which they knew, one would think they might do a bit better by us). The front desk credited us for half of our room rate, and didn’t charge us for canceling the second night on short notice. So, the Vintage experience only cost us $110 + $3-$4 for hydrocortisone lotion for my wife + a night’s sleep.
