A Property in Decline

I've stayed at this hotel perhaps 6 or 7 times in the last half-dozen years (since before it was a Quality Inn). What kept me coming back was a combination of factors: relatively large rooms ("mini-suites"), a decent indoor pool that has always been bath water warm, the convenient location (lots of restaurants, shopping, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame nearby), and a fairly reasonable price. About 2 years ago we started going elsewhere when we visited Canton because of a bad visit which included poor service, a smokey room (supposedly non-smoking), and peeling paint in the pool (some of the floating flakes were several inches across). We decided to give the hotel another try about a year ago, and I would rate that visit as "OK".
However, this last visit might have been the back breaker. In my opinion, hotels should be required by law to indicate when the property is undergoing renovation at the time the reservation is made. Upon our arrival we discovered hallways in various states of repair. There was bare drywall in places. Carpeting had been ripped up in large sections, leaving bare concrete and tack strips (complete with the sharp little tacks exposed). I understand the need to renovate, but the guest should be informed of this in advance.
Certainly our room could have used some renovation. The tile in the bathroom was in poor shape and the floor was uneven. There were large cracks in the drywall in places. The carpeting was worn.
Initially we were unable to enter our room with the card keys provided. Eventually the person at the desk made their way to our room to "re-program" the lock.
We had all this fun to the tune of $86 a night. What do I expect, you say, for less than $100? Compare this to the nearly new Hyatt Place that we stayed at near Detroit for $89 - a beautiful, modern property with a 42" plasma TV in our room. Also compare to the Amerihost that we stayed in east of Cleveland - also quite new, with a beautiful pool area - for $79.
There were a few bright spots - a friendy and efficient cleaning staff, a great location - but these hardly make up for the negatives. I was probably generous giving this 3 stars, but since we had several decent stays in the past (and being hopeful that the repairs come together), I decided to be generous.
