Normandie Hotel, San Juan

The place is deserted........Nobody home! We heard while we were in PR, Hardrock Cafe will be replacing the Normandie. I have pictures of this hotel, not close to what it looks like!

This is the most under-rated hotel in San Juan. Not one more cookie cutter, but a real art deco. I lived in PR for 3 years so had plenty of opportunity to check out everything. For the money this is the best hotel in San Juan with spacious, unique rooms. The beach is small, but you are immediately beside a very large, public beach. Short taxi ride to old San Juan. A good location, since there is really no perfect location in San Juan anyway. I think why this place gets some bad press is it is not your typical casino on the beach place to hole up like a lot of the larger hotels in San Juan.

The hotel is showing its age, it could use an update. The room was large, comfortable bed, but the sofa in the sitting room was too stain as well as the carpets.

This hotel has a lot of unfinished details that make it an uncomfortable stay. We heard loud banging sounds (pipes?) at random times throughout the day and night. Our friends stayed in 2 other rooms: one room smelled like sewage. None of the rooms had all the details (e.g., paint, bathroom renovation, mirrors) complete. Continental breakfast was poor and exorbitantly priced. Concierge service was terrible: we never received the welcome package for the wedding we attended until we asked everyone at the hotel about it for 2 days. There were loud dance parties every night until midnight - 1pm. Front desk staff appeared not to care about their customers and sometimes were altogether absent. The only good thing about this hotel was the cleaning staff: they did an excellent job.

The hotel had a nice decor, & the rooms were spacious. It wasn't near anything, so we had to take cabs everywhere. Thier "beach" was just a few yards of shore line. The gift shop was incredibly small & overpriced (even by hotel standards). On our last night, they had an event in the open-air lobby & we could here the loud music in our room till about 2 a.m. We were refunded half of the price for the last night only after we complained. The only reason I would recommend staying here is if you can't afford the Hilton next door. You can pay the lower price of the Normandie & walk next door to enjoy the Hilton's large beach, good buffet, & all the other amenities the Hilton has to offer.

Top Kudos to Yahoo Travel. The direct flights to and from Newark, NJ to Luis-Munoz Marin Airport in Carolina San Juan PR, Hertz car check in, hotel check in, ancillary transport to and from the Hertz car rental to the airport and back upon return, and all checkouts were flawless and extremely well prepared and synchronized by all staffs. All staffs were completely professional and caring. I researched all the hotels in San Juan and chose the Normandie above all the others based on the user reviews alone. I am glad that I did, and even though it was only 4-star rated hotel, it had better ratings than the 5- star rated hotels. The hotel is impeccable, in a fantastic location, and totally relaxed atmosphere. The beaches behind the hotel are very nice. I recommend that you DO rent a car as we did and get out and see the Island. Hwy 2 is fraught with perils, but I52S running to Ponce is an excellent highway and the trip to Ponce is fabulous with the best rated seaside seafood restaurants on the Island [see Yo Ya’s particulary]. I also recommend that you visit the ‘Place de Carribe’ Shipping Center off of 18S approx 10 mins from the Normandie, which is an ultra modern US style Mall, and in particular the Ponderosa steakhouse and Romanos restaurant for fabulous and affordable cuisine. The restaurants in Condado on the main strip are very expensive and the food was not that good. You’ll get all your shopping done here and the prices are fantastic! The only complaint that I can raise about the Normandie is their computer room, and I brought this up to top management there on checkout. On the ground level there are two very nice XP computers, however, both are fraught with over 50 viruses and Trojan horses and there is no SYSADM available to clean’em up. I discovered this by running an external sweep of the systems from Symantec remote server on the mainland. This puts the user in danger of complete identity theft if you enter any credit card or personal passwords on specific accounts. I sternly warned the hotel management that they could face serious personal damage litigation if they did not fix this if someone is injured as a consequence. They took my warning very seriously. This does not detract though from the totally marvelous experience we had there. We had a wonderful week on our 30th wedding anniversary vacation. during this trip i stayed a few days at the Caribe Hilton & also a few days at the Hotel Normandie (which is right next door). This is a nice boutique hotel with a good location at a reasonable price. the hotel environment is very relaxing; common areas were just a little nicer than inside the room but rooms were large with a great view. hotel has beach access but private beach of neighboring Hilton is much nicer. all told, this is a nice historic hotel & also a good value. i would stay here again..

Friendly, nice well appointed spacious room. Great super friendly staff! Shower did not work so great. could use some improvement. And, the fitness room could use some new equipment. However, for the price paid this is a great place to stay. I would definitely consider the Normandie for my next trip to San Juan.

This is a nice hotel but it need a nice make over, it need to replaced all of the carpet in the hotel, fix the craks in all the wall update the bathroom. I stayed on the 7th floor and my nice was nice except for my balcony door would notlock. I really do not think that this is safe for a women.
