Iffy Service, Good Location

First, I’ll highlight the positives. The hotel had quite a good location, within easy walking distance of Chinatown, the University, Yonge Street, the Theatre District, etc. The lobby was nice and the room was pretty.
Now, onto the bad. We had a reservation and a confirmation number. Check-in was at 3 pm, and we were supposed to have a room with a queen bed. We arrived at 4 pm to find our room was not ready. The woman at the desk was not apologetic at all. I asked if there was something they could do to assist us (meaning, give us a discount or somehow compensate us otherwise). She said she could upgrade us to a luxury suite for $100 more. What a joke! Then, she compounded the situation by explaining there were a lot of European tourists stranded there due to the volcano in Iceland, and they were trying to check them back in to their "dirty" rooms and get the leftover rooms cleaned for the other guests asap. I can't believe she said that with a straight face! I do sympathize with the stranded tourists, but she basically explained to me she is giving precedence to guests who have already checked out rather than incoming guests who have actually reserved their rooms for that night. At the very least, it showed poor training/professionalism that she would actually explain that to us.
On top of that, we asked how long it would be, and she said in an exasperated tone, it could be a half hour, could be an hour. My boyfriend and I had to basically go take a walk in the cold wind and rain for an hour to kill time.
When we went back to the hotel around 5 pm, our room was finally ready. When we got into our room, it was nice, but very small. Plus, the bed was definitely a double! No way was that a queen size bed! We were exhausted so didn't bother complaining, but it was frustrating.
The room was fairly clean and had a nice scent to it. Décor was slightly French-country. The shades did not block out the light as well as they could have. The bed was very noisy /rickety sounding for a hotel bed, which was pretty shocking! The walls were also thin. I could hear our next door neighbors pretty clearly.
After we freshened up, we decided to venture back out into the city for dinner. The elevator took about 10 minutes! When we arrived in the lobby, we asked the woman at the front desk for a street map and some ideas for areas with lots of restaurants. She was nice and pointed out some routes we could take… so we took one of them. Well, she had us walking down what ended up being a district of office buildings. We walked for blocks and blocks with absolutely no restaurants except the occasional Tim Horton’s! We finally made our way to the Theatre District where there was a block of restaurants.
The final blow was when we got a wake-up call that we had not requested at 7 am. Being awoken so early just made us go back to sleep and sleep in later than we would have.
If I was able to get a really good deal, I would go back there again for the location… but if you are looking for a place with an emphasis on customer service, I would go elsewhere.
