John Rutledge House Inn, Charleston

We checked into the John Rutledge grand suite for a 5 night stay on Christmas Eve, December 24th for our honeymoon. We were charged nearly $400 per night for this suite. The website pictures show a room that is brand new; however, these pictures are a lie. We checked into the George Washington Suite. The room looked old and not as the website showed. The couches and chairs in the sitting room looked ragged and dirty. The pull out couch was broken and not opperational. The sitting chair in the bedroom was ivory but was obviously dirty from use. After a few minutes of sitting in the bed my throat closed up and my eyes were red and watering. After inspecting the canopy bed, the fabric all around the bed was yellow with mold, and looked as if it had not been cleaned in years. Our stay at John Rutledge lasted 2 hours, and they had the audacity to charge us a $125 cleaning fee. The innkeepers response to the deplorable condition of the room was simply "it is a 250 year old inn...what did you expect?" So I would like all reviewers to be aware that this inn is not what it appears to be. Also, I would like to note that our room was literally 5 steps from the front door, the manager's desk was on the wall outside were our bed was, so all the conversation taking place outside was audible in the room, and the stairs creaked each time people walked up and was very noisy when sitting in the bed. So if you would like to stay at an overpriced, run-down inn...this is the perfect place for you. Just make sure you do not have any allergies because you will definitely need to see a doctor after being here for a few hours. Needless to say our honeymoon, and Christmas was nearly ruined due to this! My husband is active duty military and we will probably not have another Christmas' together for a few years. Forturnatley, I was able to find a different, beautiful bed and breakfast that night. I would never return to this inn, and would caution anyone from wasting their money at this inn!!

The concierge staff at John Rutledge Inn was wonderful. Someone was available 24 hours/day. A nice surprise was that our room was upgraded to a suite - compliments of the Inn. We enjoyed stepping back in time, sipping sherry or port wine in the ballroom and having afternoon tea & pastries with the other guests. Reading the history of the Inn and getting to know about its previous owners, its guests and its renovation was enlightning. We had our breakfast delivered to our "suite" in the morning and our bed turned down in the evening. The staff made us feel like we were very special guests. They did whatever they could to make our stay enjoyable. And it was. Thank you all. Tom and Vivian Mazzola

It was a great experience, from the excellent service to setting. It was as though we stepped back in time. We highly recommend this inn for your stay. The wine in the main inn in the evening was a great touch.

Very nice place. I enjoyed it, but mabey this is weird, but i believed that i seen a ghost of a little girl while i was there. Spooked me to say the least. But other than that very nice.
