Shilo Inn Seaside Oceanfront Doesn't Like Kids
We recently went to Seaside for a basketball tournament. The Shilo Inn was happy to take $200 dollars a day for a room, but they're customer service towards those with children was disgusting! If a child tried to go back to their room alone to grab something forgotton or to go rest, they were nabbed by a security guard, or worse, a police officer and hauled down to the front desk. When a parent complained about this, the manager said, "Then you can stay somewhere else next time."
Our team rented a banquet room and had a birthday party for our coach. We paid $10 a person for a pizza part. At the appointed time, two bowls of salad and breadsticks were put out. We waited...and waited...and waited. The pizzas were coming out every 30 minutes. We had seventy people in that room, and one pizza doesn't go far! Plus, the pizzas weren't cooked all the way, and they gave us mostly vegetarian. While we did get 'free' pop, we figured that they had about a 1000% mark up on their food and beverage.
On the way out after the party, several of our kids were stopped and harassed for being in the halls. They weren't running, just going up to their rooms. When I stepped into the elevator, a maintenance man joined me. The elevator reeked of urine, and when I complained, he told me that it was a cleaning chemical that they use on the elevators and that it would go away in 10-15 minutes. I stepped out of the elevator, and my husband told me that the manager had been screaming about how someone had set off a stink bomb. He ordered the desk clerk to call the police, and she hesitated, worried that they wouldn't come out for a stink bomb. The manager yelled, "Fine! Tell them that we've been vandalized!" He lied to get the police out there! Also, which was it? Cleaning chemicals or a stink bomb?
The final straw was on the last day when employees locked two 13-year-old kids on the roof. They were able to get onto the roof through an unlocked and unmarked door, and when they saw they were on the roof, they decided to go back. When they got to the door, they had been LOCKED OUT ONTO THE ROOF, and management called the police. The kids were stuck on the roof for over 30 minutes, in the dark, and they were extremely frantic and traumatized by the time the police got there. The police refused to consider it a trespassing offense because the door was unmarked and unlocked. The Shilo Inn employees should be fired for negligence. When asked about the possibility of injury on a dark roof, the front desk imp (she's truly evil) said, "Too bad. They shouldn't have been up there.
Seaside businesses make a ton of money on these basketball tournments. The Shilo Inn Oceanfront gets $200 a night in the OFF season. If they don't want kids there, fine. Tell people up front. But if you are taking someone's money, you need to treat them like guests instead of prisoners.
Take my advice. Spend your $200 a night anywhere else. Rent a house. Do anything but stay at this truly horrific hotel - especially if you have children.
