Room felt like the Polar Bear Express - Brrrr!

We were familiar with Embassy Suites in other cities and expected this one to be comparable - open atrium, pleasant ambiance, etc. Not so! When we walked into the tiny lobby from the street, we initially thought we were in the wrong hotel. The online images made the lobby appear much larger and more attractive than the real thing. But it was late and we were tired and thought: "We're only going to be here 2 nights. It's an Embassy Suites Hotel, how bad can it be?"
The first indication was the parking: $18 (plus tips) daily for valet, $10 to self park - except if you self-parked it was $10 each time you moved your car. The room was very spacious but sparsely furnished - and it was freezing in there! My husband called to inquire about the temperature and was told that November 1 was the date the hotel turned off the air conditioning. Unfortunately, we arrived a month too early. We accepted their offer of extra blankets and hoped the room would be warmer the next morning. All I can say is: Have you ever tried to take a shower wrapped in a blanket?
Leaving the hotel was also an adventure. The buttons on the right and left sides of the elevator did not work (only the middle panel was operational), but there was no sign to inform guests. After waiting 10 minutes for the elevator, we were informed about the middle buttons by someone getting off on our floor. The morning we checked out, there had been a concert downtown the previous night and the hotel was full. Groups of guests were gathered at elevators on every floor trying to leave the hotel. We got on the elevator on the 9th floor and pushed the button for one. The elevator stopped at the 3rd floor and went back up to 10. Although the 1st floor button was pushed at each stop, the elevator continued to go up and down between floors for about 20 minutes until someone suggested that holding the button might make it go to the first floor. It worked! I'm so glad I'm not claustrophobic.
Most of the staff were pleasant and tried to make the best of the situation. The gym was well equipped and breakfast was good. Anyone considering this hotel should keep in mind that its design is different from the open floor plan of other Embassy Suites locations. Also, if you're there before the hotel turns on the air conditioning or heat, you would have to be part Iguana or Polar Bear to be comfortable in your room.
