Nice but...
Let me start by saying this is right in the middle of everything in South Haven. The location couldn't be better. We could walk to everything, including the beach, and nothing was more than a ten minute walk, or less. The view of the river from our room was fantastic! I could have spent both days just watching all the action out on the river. Here comes the but...what we really wanted was a room with a view AND a deck where we could sit and watch everything; what we got was a small step-out balcony where the chairs could only be set up facing each other. It looked to me as though the only way we could have gotten the deck we were looking for was if we had chosen a room on the middle level of some of the buildings, and then we would have had to share with random tourists who also have access to those same decks. Also, only one of the nice doors leading to the balconies was functional, so we couldn't even prop open the doors and sit in the room and look out.
The room itself was nice enough, but there was only one comfortable chair in the place. The futon was torture after 20 minutes or so. The bed was comfortable and I loved the pillows (in most hotels I have to ask for more).
We were given a different room from the one we reserved because the work being done to the room we reserved wasn't quite finished. Surprising, since I was told when making the reservation that all it needed to be complete was a new bed. I would have thought 2 weeks would have been long enough to replace the bed but apparently not. The room was clean when we got there, but the second day of our stay someone came in and took all the dirty towels, cleaned the kitchen sink (left the cleaner!) and then left, leaving the room door open! We tried calling the front office but never got an answer. Since nothing of ours seemed to be missing, we locked up again and went out hoping to give someone a chance to come back and finish cleaning. That never happened. We had to go to the office to get fresh towels and report what had happened. The other complaint I had about the room was the shower. My shoulders touched both the shower curtain and the opposite wall as I was standing under the shower! All they need to do to fix that is move the shower curtain out a few inches! Makes for an uncomfortable shower in the morning!
The last thing I want to talk about is the parking. There are several town lots that you are free to park in but be prepared to drive around looking for a space for a while, especially later in the day. Again, the lots are not that far from the Old Harbor Inn, but it is difficult to find a spot.
We enjoyed our stay in South Haven but would have no matter where we stayed. In our opinion we overpaid for what we got. If we had been able to access the deck like we hoped it wouldn't have been an issue. But just to be in the middle of the action? Way too overpriced!
