Nice balance of features

Stayed here for our honeymoon in Aug 2006, immediately after renovations were completed. Stayed for a few nights here, then went out to the Motu for the InterCon Thalasso. Stayed in horizon/diamond overwater bungalows. Both were very nice resorts, but we liked Le Moana more (despite Thalasso being brand new and much more expensive). Thalasso felt very sterile, while Le Moana was much more warm and inviting (example: Thalasso everything is very trendy, reminded us of higher end NYC clubs, seemed out of place on a tropical island). Le Moana was great, very nice rooms and pleasant staff, much nicer beach than any other resort we saw (incl Thalasso), and importantly, it is on the main island, so you don't have to get a shuttle boat to explore the island (which we would highly recommend!) Lastly, the snorkeling is better at Le Moana, in part because the beach is much nicer, but also because there is more coral (newly constructed bungalows don't have coral because the construction ruins it all, and the fish only hang out by the coral)
As noted elsewhere, food here is disappointing, like most places in Bora Bora (we did like Kaihna Hut though, but got sushi, so you would expect it to be good). It is fun to leave the resort and grab some food at the several snacks (small restaurants) nearby. If you walk away from town on the road, you'll find a pizza place and a grocery store... one of the most fun nights we had on our honeymoon was grabbing pizza and Tahitian beer and just relaxing on the balcony of our bungalow. (You can only eat so much fish before you get sick of it, and if it's not fish, it's not good in Bora Bora, with the exception of pizza, which is pretty much impossible to mess up).
The one downside vs other resorts is the relationships with activity providers. The SCUBA (through Bora Dive Center) was good, but we had to take a shuttle bus to the dive center, get on a boat, and then we went and picked up other divers via boat at other resorts. They should have the SCUBA boat pick people up at the resort (ditto for Thalasso, but then you have to catch the InterCon shuttle boat to Le Moana and then take a shuttle bus). Also, to rent bikes, they send you to EuropCar. Worst choice, the bikes were terrible (also, had to ride a ways to the rental shop). There are much, much nicer bikes available on Matira Point right outside the gates of the Le Moana. The clothing store rents bikes, as does the little place across the street. Both have much nicer, multi-speed bikes for the same price as EuropCar.
Key point: even if the prices were the same, we would prefer Le Moana to Thalasso, and since Le Moana is much cheaper, it is a no brainer to us. We went with the most expensive option on a motu, and concluded its better to be on the main island.
